Lao Cai

Lao Cai to Hanoi DayTrain

Has anyone out there taken the day train from Lao Cai to Hanoi. What is it like? The scenery, comfortor lack thereof, anything?

Thank you,

I took the day train back from Lao Cai back in 1995 in the days before there were sleeper carriages. I remember that the soft seat carriages had metal gratings over the windows to protect passengers from getting pelted by stones and other projectiles thrown by delinquents. Anyways, for subsequent years, the night train sleepers are great since the scenery along the rail lines wasn't that spectacular. But the ride from the Lao Cai train station up into the Sapa hills should not be missed.

I understand the day train is a waste - not much to see, and the service is hard seat (no private carriages). It is considerably cheaper than the private carriages.
