KD Cruises

Should I get my tickets for August in advance or will I be ok just getting them on the day of?

I'm going from Oberwesel to Assmannshausen as early as possible on Aug 7th and will return as late as possible. I will also go from Oberwesel to Koln on the Aug 8th.

Thanks for the help!

dear staff,
I will be travelling to Germany in 2010. I would like to travel from
Mainz to Köln. I looked at the timetable and it seems that the only
cruise departs Mainz at 0845 and arrives at Köln at 2000. Is this
correct. I intend to travel on 18th august. Will I need to book. I intend
to get either a rail pass from Bahn.de or an eurail pass and I read that
KD cruises are included in the pass. Is this correct.
Thank you fro your assistance.
danke

JonJon, you are going "against the current" with your first leg (Oberwesel to Assmannshausen). This means that the boat needs approx. double the time than for your return to Oberwesel. The Rhein river current is quite strong. Just consider this, it explains the timetable.
I would say that you don't need to purchase in advance if you take one of their "normal" boats = the boats without any kind of special party or celebration (described as Scheduled Cruises on their website).
Take the 10:50 boat from Oberwesel, you arrive in Assmannshausen at 12:30. The last boat from Assmannshausen back to Oberwesel is at 16:45 (arrives in Oberwesel at 17:35).
For August 8 there is only one boat that suits you, the one that leaves Oberwesel at 11:35 and arrives in Cologne/Köln at 20:00.

Lynee: yes, there is only one boat per day in their summer schedule that goes from Mainz to Cologne, said 8:45 from Mainz, 20:00 in Cologne. It is one of the scheduled cruises and you won't need to buy a ticket in advance in my opinion.
It is summer holidays time and on these scheduled boats there is coming and going of passengers anyhow. Your advantage is that, since you get on the boat in the first city/Mainz, you have the free choice of seats :-) That's something that drives me mad sometimes. I usually get on the boat in Bingen and on great weather days the best seats on the top deck are gone.

If you both like, I can call KD and ask them.

Thanks for the info Trekki.

If I wanted to spend the day in the Assmannshausen area would you suggest I take the train one way? Like take the boat there in the morning and train back later in the evening(20:13)?

JonJon, not really, because both are on different sides of the river. And none has both a ferry AND a train station. The only possibility I could think of is to take the train from Oberwesel to Bingen, get off and walk to the ferry which goes to Rüdesheim (approx. 20 min walk) and get on the train from there to Assmannshausen, which is the next stop north.
I am hoping that VTer @[VT member 822ab] finds this post and gives his/her opinion. Abalada is our expert whenever it comes to train and also KD line.

Sorry, forgot to mention that you could take an evening train from Assmannshausen to St. Goarshausen (that's the village next to Loreley rock), take the ferry across the river to St. Goar and from there the train back to Oberwesel (next station).

JonJohn, I just looked up the schedules for my last suggestion. It is very tight!
Trains from Assmannshausen to St. Goarshausen:
19:18 (arrives 19:39) and 20:18 (arrives 20:39).
The distance between train station in St. Goarshausen is approx. 500 m and the last ferry leaves at 21:00:

Maybe it runs longer during summer (actually it says April 30 on their page).
Distance ferry to train station in St. Goar is approx. 200 - 250 m.
The trains leave there:
21:21 (arrive in O. 5 min later) and the next is at 22:21.
So 20 minutes left to run from train to ferry on both sides.

Here is the itinerary that I was hoping to follow. Would returning from Ruedesheim give me more time or access to a ferry to get a train? There is a 16:15 boat back from Ruedesheim, do you think ~4 hours is enough for what I want to do?

* Take a boat in the morning from Oberwesel to Assmannshausen.

* Walk through Assmannshausen.

* Take the chair lift up to the Niederwald Park. Have a late lunch at the "Jadgschloss" (hunting lodge).

* Head to the Niederwald Monument

* Take the chairlift which is right next to the monument. It goes down to Ruedesheim.

* Spend some time in Ruedesheim.

* Take the boat back to Oberwesel.

You always have the option to use the ferry from Rüdesheim to Bingen and from there by train back to Oberwesel. Or you can do this itineray in reverse order.

Albeit ticket wise it will be the best to buy a ticket Oberwesel - Rüdesheim and return, as a return tickets with KD costs barely more than a single ticket.

> I will also go from Oberwesel to Koln on the Aug 8th.
A long day on the boat. My recommendation:
Boat from Oberwesel to Braubach, visiting Marksburg Castle there and afterwards by train to Köln.

Yes. Only one connection per day from Mainz to Cologne. And only in this direction (downstream). Upstream it is not possible to make this distance in one day.

> I intend to travel on 18th august.Will I need to book.
No. This is even not possible (only for groups).

Yes. But it will cost you one travel day on your rail pass. Of course you can use also the trains on the same day. But if you travel from Mainz to Cologne by Mainz you won't have that much time left on this day to use additionally also trains.
