Kuala Lumpur

Travel ideas

Hi,

On August 28th we are going to Malaysia and start on a volunteering programme on the 3rd of September at Kuching. Therefore, we still have some days left to fill in.

Our plan; Day 1: Kuala Lumpur Day 2: Kuala Lumpur + Bhatu Caves (evening flight to Langkawi) Day 3; Langkawi Day 4; Langkawi (afternoon boat to Penang or maybe flight) Day 5; Penang Day 6; Penang (afternoon flight to Kuching)

We can also go to other places other then Langkawi or Penang, but it is hard to chose. What do you recommend? Is it worth it to see both Langkawi and Penang?

Thanks!

It's always nice to see all and both as you asked, but I would propose you to concentrate to two of you list. Select either KL/Penang or KL/Langkawi, you have only six days and you are spending time to transportation if all included. Last time I was in KL and Langkawi, that is one possibility but I was recommended to take Penang instead of Langkawi. Inspect what is around in these places, make your TopX list and then select. There's a lot of interest in all places in your list.

I would also support choosing one from Langkawi and Penang. Langkawi is more of an island with water sports and beaches - very popular among tourists from the Sub-Continent and then no excise duty means cheap imported products, like liquor, as compared to other parts in Malaysia. Penang is the cultural hub, a fusion of colonial, chinese, malay, and Indian culture. Culture includes places of warships, building structures, food, etc. Penang is very popular with backpackers and young tourists.

I would also recommend a contrasting place: Cameron Highlands, which is very different as it is a cool hill station in the otherwise hot and humid tropical country. The place is easy to reach from KL and is famous for its mossy forests, jungle treks, tea planatation, strawberry farms, etc.. A favorite retreat for locals.

So this is something based on my little experience. Have a great fun trip whatever you finally decide to choose...

Just returned from Kota Kinabalu ( North Borneo) Malaysian Sabah. We flew Air Asia from Perth Australia to KL, connecting flight to KK. From KL domestic flights within Malaysia are extremely cheap using Air Asia. We have also visited Kuching, the orangutangs are better there , approx 20 when we visited, in KK 3 weeks ago only 2 babies on show at the 5 star resort (au$44 to view). Check my various Malaysian pages , including KL, Malaka, Frasers Hill. We also visited Cameron Highlands which is very good ( no page).

To help you to make a better decision, I still recommend that you do not missed Penang after your Langkawi trip. I shall say it a must visit since you are already here. Penang have more exciting things to do compare to Langkawi. e.g. Heritage trails, street foods, live style, culture and many more. Wish you make a wise decision and happy holiday.

In KL you can enjoy The Petronas Towers just from outside as you are short of time Batu caves where there is a Hindu temple KL Tower where you can also enjoy the 4-D ride plus staying in JW Marriott at Bukit Bintang will give all types of food plus shopping and a busy nightlife. You can also go to Genting Highland which is just a couple of hours drive from KL enjoy one of the biggest Casino in Malaysia theme parks and a refreshing cable car. In Langkawi you can enjoy a lot of beach activities I'll recommend Berjaya Langkawi Resort where I stayed in their on sea chalet, go for hiking in the mountains and in the mangroves treks, you can also hire a bike or a car to explore the beautiful Island. Langkawi Cable Car in one of the highest in the world with a beautiful Oriental Park at it's base station. Under Water World Langkawi is also worth seeing.....wish you a happy journey :-)

Very much so. Langkawi has nature to wow visitors while Penang is on the Heritage List. There are people willing to help you with your travel arrangements. Trust me on that. Cheers!

Langkawi has more to see as compared to Penang where there i s only a train climbing the only mountain which is good, but nothing much.

East coast Islands like Redang, perhentian, Tioman are having better beaches, snorkeling diving!
