Alone at Kota Kinabalu :(  (6 Answers)

Hi guys.

Its been awhile since i've been active in virtualtourist, but im in the need of help or suggestion.

U see, i'm temporarily allocated in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah for a couple of months (company project, nothing biggie). As much as I love it here (only been here for 2 weeks though), i just found out that Kaamatan festival is around the corner and all my teammates here seem to have already made plans with their families (they are sabahan). So, i'll be left alone this Saturday (28th May) to Tuesday (31st May).

Im pretty much clueless on what to do or where to go and whether is it safe for me to be travelling alone around Sabah during those 4 days. Any suggestion on what i can do? Or better yet, is there any free spirited traveller that would like to join me to travel any parts or Sabah? Or is there any local that could be kind enough to guide or accompany me?

Thanks in advance. Hope to hear from anyone :)

Where to stay in Kota Kinabalu  (2 Answers)

Wondering if anyone can give me some advice on where to stay in KK?

We are going for around five nights and are not sure to stay in the city centre or down town.
As we would like to venture out in the evenings and try local restaurants, and visit the Sunday market.

Also looking to do some snoorkling and island hopping.

Any hotel recommendations would be great.

How to take taxi from Kota Kinabalu Int'l Airport-1 to downtown Kota Kinabalu at 2 AM?  (16 Answers)

I will arrive in Kota Kinabalu International Airport Terminal 1 on Feb 17 at 1:30 AM from Philippines. I understand that the only public transport available is taxi. I also know that during wee hours of the morning coupon taxis have extra charges which I can't afford. This is my first time in KK and I am booked at North Borneo Cabin in downtown. I will be traveling in budget. I am bit worried as I don't want to be overcharged or be victimized by an opportunist taxi drivers. Is there a spot within the terminal 1 complex where legitimate taxis wait for arriving passengers headed to city center? Where do I go to get to the taxi queue or taxi loading areas? Can you please give me a direction from arrival area to the taxi loading station? What are tips and advise that you can give so that I can avoid being scammed or victimized by an overcharging taxi driver? I will appreciate all the help. Thank you so much in advance.

Climbing Kinabalu in April 2015  (4 Answers)

Hello me and my girlfriend want to climb Mount Kinabalu to the top. We want to climb it early in April 12 or 13 April.
I see a lot of compleet packages on the internet.
We see Climbing with a group is cheaper but we can only book online with 2 persons.
Is it possible in April to just go to the national park en book a climb 1 or 2 days before.
Or can I still book the hike to the top when I arrive by plane in Kota Kinabalu on the 10th of April 2015? Can I just book at a tourist office in Kota Kinabalu and will that be cheaper?

4D/3N trip to Kota Kinabalu  (4 Answers)

My family of three plan to take a 4D/3N trip to Kota Kinabalu.
My tentative plan is as follows:-
D1: tour in Kota Kinabalu (KK) with the first night inKK.
D2 We will depart for Kundasang area by hired car, touring most of the interesting spots during the to/ fro journey between KK and Kundasang. We will put up a night in a resort hotel ( Melisau) at the foot hill of Mount Kinabalu.
From my study of the Sabah map,
One can take any of the following routes:--
(1) Leave KK to Kundasang via Tuaran by Route A1 and A4, reaching Kundasang.
Night at Kundasang area.
On Day 3, go towards Ranau by Route SA3.Thereafter go back to KK , via Tambunan by route SA3.
This is a sort of 'Clockwise ' route.
The question is : is is worth the while to take the return route (to KK ) by way of Tambunan?
(2) OR
it willl be better to take the route in an 'Anti-clockwise' way that leaving KK via Tambunan to Ranau and next reach Kundasang, and finally return to KK via Tuaran.
(3) OR
It is better just go to Kundasang ( and Ranau ) , and on the 3rd day, return to KK via Tuaran?

Second Topic:
I am not familiar with Sabah area, while I understand that in the Kundasang/ Ranou area. the interesting tourist spots are"--
Nabalu Park,
Desa Farm
Kundasang War Memorial
Sabah Tea Garden
Poring Hot Spring
Kinabalu Park, and nay other food spots (?)
i will leave for Kundasang (Melisau Resort) on D2 morning, and will return to KK on the evening of D3.
Can some good souls please give me a short lesson on KK/Kundasanf geography, with suggested literary , so that my trip to this area will not incur too many unnecessary 'U turns"

Many thanks for the anticipated helps and tips

Day trips from KK  (3 Answers)

We would like to spend some time in KK (5 days) and would like to do some day trips away from KK. This is my ideas:
- we dont want to join any group tours
- we would like to rent a car (we are 4 persons), but cant drive (left side driving), so driver (guide drive is essential)

Places to be visited (my suggestions):

- some nice rural rice paddies (I dont expect rice terraces)
- Monsopiad Cultural Village
- Kinarut megalith statue (there should be more of them around) - I dont know possition
- Beaufort to Tenom railway (and back, I assume car cant get through and should go around)
- Rafflesia Forest Reserve Centre - worth to visit it?
- Mahua waterfalls - worth to visit it?
- Mengkabong and/or Panimbawan villages
- Kudat penninsula (Rungus Longhouses, gong village, tip of Borneo) - is it safe area?

We dont want to climb Mt. Kinabalu. Before Sabah we spent 10 days in Sarawak doing Rajang river cruise, Bako Ntl. park and Niah Ntl. Park so we would omit further jungle treks in Sabah.

It is possible to stay overnight somewhere on the way, we are OK with very simple comfort (we dont expect hot water shower in a village).

How does it sound? Any recommendation (nice valleys, photogenic scenes ...)?

Thanks a lot!

4D3N Itinerary (Family trip, a group of 10 pax)  (9 Answers)

I have actually plan for my family trip in KK with a group of 10 people, half of them aged above 50 and half of them are my cousins.

We are going to stay at Marina Court (heard this would be the best option to accomodate big group with the apartment), and we plan to rent a van that can fit 10 of us, be if with driver or my uncle can take the ride.

Please see if my itinerary works with the consideration of timing and the for the eldery. They are 1st time in KK (except me)

Day 1:
- Arrive in the evening 5pm
- Plan to get the van and rent for my entire travelling day (until Day 4 12pm)
Q: worth it? or other best alternatives?
- Dinner at Gaya street/ Damai Plaza/ places nearby

Day 2:
- Rumah Terbalik
- Mount Kinabalu Park
- Poring Hot Spring
- Desa Dairy Farm - Kundasang
Q: Feasible to do so, is that too rush? and worth for travel that far again the next day?

Day 3:
- Kudat_Rungus Longhouse
Q: How far is this from town?
- Sepilok Orang Utan/ Zoo?
- Seafood dinner @ Gayang
Q: is that along the way for Day 3? Or shd it be at Day 2 instead?

Day 4:
- Philipino Market in the morning?
- Check out at 10am

Question: the elderly are looking for frozen kind of sea/ seafood product (fish, dried scallop etc) , any place recommended for that with reasonable price?

Thanks alot!
