Japan

Japan Itinerary Recs - 2 weeks- April 2017

I am traveling to Japan for the first time with one friend in the first 2 weeks of April next year for cherry blossom season (we are both in our 30s FYI)

We are flying in/out of Tokyo and have 14 days in Japan. We want to do 4-5 days in Tokyo and 3-4 in Kyoto (with da trips) but open to other suggestions

Would love some ideas/suggestions for the following to help plan our trip

1) Tokyo recommendations (incl day trips outside of town)- not sure if too cold then to see Mt Fuji in April?
2) Kyoto recommendations (incl day trips outside of town)
3) Kanazawa - worth seeing?
4) Any ryokan suggestions for Tokyo/Kyoto ?
5) Hot Springs in or near Tokyo/Kyoto ?
6) Any other things we shouldn't miss?

That is a pretty board question - what's your budget and what do you like doing?

I can think of a lot of things that are worth doing, but everyone is different. My current tour has been heavy on samuari, ninja and castles. Other trips are more history and temple/shrine based.

Almost all of my guests indulge in good food, so that certainly sits at the top of many lists.

For ryokan, maybe select a location outside of Tokyo and Kyoto - with tow weeks you have time to explore several different locatons (including Kanazawa).

Hi Patrick

Thanks for your quick reply

Budget wise would say mid range but will splurge if something is really worth it (ie the fast bullet train)- hotel wise fairly mid range. I would say focus more on history/culture and food

Found a few ryokan's so think set on that area I think

Should we try to see Mt Fuji or just too cold during April (been told most ppl see it on the bullet train b/t Tokyo and Kyoto)

Any other towns besides Kanazawa that you'd recommend for food/culture (prob less interested in ninjas and castles right now, but maybe another trip :))

Thank you!!!

Every group I take is different, so interests vary.

I know some affordable hotels and a nice ryokan in Kanazawa, and Takayama is a nice addition to a trip (to the mountains) as the town is interesting irrespective if you go to Shirakawa-go or visit the more interesting and varied Hida Mura.

The bullet tran gets cheap with the rail passes if you choose wisely (my current trip is costing Y60,000 without a pass, but my guests are on the Y46,390 14-day pass so they are saving around US150 without trying.

April is mixed weather and some days can be cold, but others warm - that should not put you off a trip to Fuji or one of the towns either side of the mountain. But if you go to Takayama, the scenery is better than seeing Fuji.

Kyoto day trips: Nara, Hiroshima
Tokyo day trips: Nikko, Matsushima, Kamakura, Hakone, Yokohama, Kawagoe (1/2 day)

Purely depends on travel interests. Notable nearby cities are KAWAGOE, URAYASU(Tokyo Disney Resorts), Yokohama. Yokosuka and Kamakura.
2) Kyoto recommendations (incl day trips outside of town)
Outside recommendation are, UJI, OTSU(Mt. Hiei and Enryakuji), HIKONE, KIZUGAWA and NARA.
3) Kanazawa - worth seeing? Definitely.
4) Any ryokan suggestions for Tokyo/Kyoto ?
5) Hot Springs in or near Tokyo/Kyoto ?
IZU or HAKONE areas have a lot of nice onsens.
6) Any other things we shouldn't miss?

Just as an idle thought - I visited Hakone/Lake Ashi in January after a large dump of snow and it was -3C. Personally I didn't think it was too cold because I had the right clothing, and the wind-chill made it colder (the water from the lake was freezing on the lakeside fence). April is a lot warmer than that.
