Negril – some questions

I am considering about visiting Jamaica (Negril) in February with my family, and i would like to ask some questions:
1) Is in 7 miles beach some promenade, where we can walk in the evening and make shopping. Are there shops with souvenirs and crafts along the beach?
2) Is Negril safe ? I have heard some stories about a crime in Jamaica, and since i am traveling with small baby, I want to feel comfortable and safe. Is it safe to walk on the streets in the evenings?
3) Are there good snorkeling possibilities? Can i see nice underwater life also just close to the beach, or is it necessary to go to some boat trip further to the sea?
4) Are there a lot of mosquitos on the beach (as i have heard) ?
Thanks

Hiking/Backpacking  (2 Answers)

Anyone who has done either of the above in Jamaica, I would love to hear your experiences. I'm planning a trip in summer 2010. Are the trails easy to navigate? What are the best maps for the area? Any country-specific dangers to hikers (besides the obvious--animal, and disease)? And anything else you think would be helpfull in planning my trip....Thanks!

Cheap transportation from Negril to Kingston

Hello everyone,

I'm planing on a trip to Jamaica in February 2010.
Our idea is to fly to Montego Bay, take a bus to a hostel (Carribbean Sunset Resort) in Negril and go from Negril to Kingston, and fly back home from Kingston (we are couchsurfing in Kingston).
We are 2 students and want to keep the trip as cheap as possible.
I found a bus operating between Montego Bay Airport and Negril (, wondering if that's a good idea?
Any suggestions for the bus between Kingston (somewhere in the center) and Kingston aiport?
And the most difficult part, a bus service between Negril and Kingston under 100 per person? Or even cheaper, I read about the route taxis, but I'm not sure if they go on such long distances or how it works exactly....I know that it's a 6-8 hours trip or similar, but we don't really care because we would just spend one day on travelling.
I'm thankful for any ideas, tips, warnings or experiences.
Nadine

Cheap accommodation in Montego Bay North area???  (3 Answers)

Hi! I'm off to Jamaica for the first time in November, landing in Kingston then free to go anyway... ideally i'd like to meet up with some friends in Montego Bay North area... so.... seriously is there any decent cheap accommodation option? I'm struggling to find something at the moment.

I know KIN is far from Mo Bay and was looking for somewhere a bit less touristy yet nice but at least if I can spend some time with them there in mo bay it'd be good.

Looking for tips and advice on accommodation and travel there on a tight budget!!

Thanks in advance

Going to Ocho Rios in December - Couple Tower Isle  (1 Answer)

Is the Couples Tower Isle the same as what used to be Couples Ochos Rios? All adult resort with island about 150 yards off beach? Anyone been there since the renovation? It was the oldest all inclusive in Jamaica, I wonder how the renovation was? We truely enjoyed our stay there before. I hope the new management is as good. Please advise. Best regards, Doug

North coast or south coast for diving  (2 Answers)

I'm thinking about going to Jamaica for 2 or maximum 3 weeks this winter.
There are organized round trips as I know for about 5 days.
The rest of the time I want to go diving or take a hike tour through the blue mountains or maybe somewhere else where it is beautiful. Ok, I will also relax and drink a rum.
It is better to go to the north coast for diving ?
Does somebody know agencies for hiking tours ?
Best month (Best weather, Diving, Hiking, Round trip) or cheapest month between november and march ?

Spending Jamaican$ vs. US$  (5 Answers)

Hi all, we are newbies. We are departing on Fri, Aug7 and have converted US$ to J$. Now I am concerned we took waaay too much J$.
What would be a good start guideline for "haggleing" on:

Taxi rate?
Souvenier rate?_t-shirts, street art, towels, etc.
Tour guide?- cane raft cruise down one of the rivers...

Really looking for a base guideline for pricing. Just want to be fair to the locals as well.
Please state US or J$ when referring.

Thanks a bunch,C

Tips for a nice week in August!

Hello I'm considering a week in Jamaica 9-16 August 2009 in Bahia Prince resort.
Hopefully not to be hit by a hurricane! If I'm reading reviews correctly, it will rain but hopefully for an hour or so and then it clears up. Is it very disrruptive for activities? Let say if we buy a day tour to the falls, to the Dolphins, etc
What are the best tours available. I didn't find many reviwes about prices and options. Although I 'm under the impression that tours are quite expensive.
I read that Dolphins cove is nearby the falls so I'd like to combine that two, as I would expect that doing it on different days would be more expensive, no?
I think I would also like to do rafting on Martha river + a visite to Montego bay.
I'm sure my tour operator will give me a list of day trips when arriving, but I'd like to know if on the resort I'd have more companies to chosse from and which one do you recommend.
Does anyone know how much do they charge at Bahia Prince to use internet per hour - I don't mean connecting my laptop, but going to a common room and use their computers.
Do European mobile phones work or do we need to rent a local mobile phone?
I've read about Mosquitos... is it very severe? or we are just fine if we put some repelent on?
Would love to hearing from your experiences!
Txs

Montego Bay and Beyond  (4 Answers)

Hello!

I will be in Montego Bay on business next month, with about four days of free time. I really want to do some hiking and have a more adventurous visit than just sitting around a resort all day and hanging out with tourists. Is there another area I can go to that is close by, easy to get to and safe for female travelers? Does anyone recommend Ocho Rios? Or better to stay put in Montego Bay and maybe take day trips?

As always, thank you fellow VT-ers for your help and advice.

Driving in Jamaica  (7 Answers)

What is it like driving in Jamaica? Is it as bad as some sources make it out to be? We are traveling for a week and want to rent a car so we can get out around the island and see more and have that independence. Is it dangerous enough to advise against that? Never been to the island so any information from experienced travelers is very welcome. Thank you!

Off the Beaten Track - Ocho Rios Vicinity  (1 Answer)

I am planning a trip to Jamaica. We have 2 nights to figure out what to do, between staying our first nights in Boston Bay and ending out trip in Negril. The only thing we have as a must-do over those few days is going to Nine Mile. Any suggestions on reasonably-priced places to stay/other things to do in the area? We're renting a car and would like to do some exploring. Anything cool or different, thanks!

Mayfield or Mayflower or Dunn's river falls?  (3 Answers)

Hi everyone,

I am going to Jamaica in a few months time. Last time I went I didn't get to go to Dunn's river falls because of a hurricane.

This time I am staying in Negril, which is 3 hours drive to Dunn's river. I've heard Mayflower/Mayfield falls is closer to Negril.

Is Mayflower/Mayfield as nice as Dunn's river? Or should I make the 3 hour / 6 hour round trip to Dunn's river. I know Dunn's is a great experience, but if I get a great experience at Mayflower falls without such a long journey that would be fantastic.

If you have been to Mayflower/Mayfield and Dunn's or have any advice, I would appreciate it.

Thanks in advance!

Jamaica for our 25th Anniversary  (1 Answer)

Planning to celibrate our 25th in Jamaica this May. Our tentative plans are to fly into Montego Bay on a Friday; rent a car and drive to the Treasure Beach area (on the South Coast) where we'll be spending 3 nights. Then it's back to MoBay and the Hilton Rose Hall Resort for 2 nights (getting this 'free' through HiltonHHonors).

Looking to stay at sub100/night accomodations in Treasure Beach. I'm already looking at a few B&B/Guesthouses, but am open to suggestions...

...for accomodations, & any other ideas for our journey.

Traveling from runaway bay to kingston?  (3 Answers)

My boyfriend and I will be in Jamaica this Feb and will be staying in Runaway Bay.For the most part we are planning on keeping most of our activities around that area and nearby towns, but would like to spend the day in Kingston. We are not renting a car, so we need some other form of transportation. I heard its a 3 to 4 hour drive to Kingston, so we want something safe, comfortable and reasonably priced.

I've done a little research and heard the bus systems aren't the best. I read on the Jamaica tourism site about something called JUTA for tourists. Is this any good?

Please advise.

Driving from Runaway Bay to Negril  (1 Answer)

My wife and I are renting a small 4wd car for our 2 week stay in Jamaica. We will drive to Runaway Bay where we will stay at a modest all-inclusive and enjoy New Year's Eve there. The second week we will be staying at a "hotel only" on the west end cliffs in Negril. What are the viable routes from Runaway to Negril without backtracking back to Mobay or going through Kingston? (that city sounds too. scary for us) I would really like to take one of the roads/tracks that transverse the island. From most accounts, I expect to encounter rough roads, livestock, pedestrians and crazy Jamaican drivers. We consider ourselves as travelers not tourists and welcome the chance to see the "real Jamaica". Off the beaten track is our thing and do not mind a few inconveniences as long as they are not a serious threat to life and limb. Also the Meet The People program sounds promising. Has anyone participated? We would sure like to hear your experiences and knowledge about the "real Jamaica".

Neil

Hello,
In December we are planning to visit Jamaica for two weekes. Did anyone take part in the Meet the People programme? Does it work?
We would like to also travel with backpacks from town to town. Is it easy to find accomodation (for example private rooms) without booking before? We have booked hostel in Montego Bay for the first 3 days, but later we would like to experience more of Jamaica.
thanks for any advice
