Housing in Jamaica

Hello friends, I'm visiting Jamaica in November for three weeks and I am having thoughts about my accomodation. Anyone who likes to share an appartment or something with a Dutch guy who is interested in discovering the island? Greets, René

Best area to stay in Jamaica  (5 Answers)

Hi, we're thinking of a trip to for two weeks during late November and just want to relax on a beach and do nothing. An all inclusive resort is what we're after but somewhere that is reasonably close to society so if we (me and the other half '30's) want to go into town we can. We've read the brochures and get rose tinted views on everything so would like a bit of feed back from those 'in the know'. Thanks in advance, Steve & Claire

Coming to a new place!  (3 Answers)

Every year my church organization goes to a different state to hold our annual convocation. Next year we would very much like it to be held in a different country, Jamaica. I am looking for the names of 6,5 or 4 star hotels that you all would recommend to hold this wonderful meeting?

Kingston - Ocho RIos  (2 Answers)

Hi all! In 3 weeks time I`ll be landing in Kingston and I have to get to ocho rios. Is there any other cheaper alternative to a taxi, because 70 USD sounds expensive to me! I heared that there are cheap minibuses which are very uncomfortable, is there any other option in between? Thanks!

What are the busses like?  (11 Answers)

Hi again, everyone. My girlfriend and I depart in a few days for Negril. I just wanted to get some last-minute"insider" opinions on the JUTA busses. What are they like? We live in Boston, Mass, so we're used to some pretty cramped trains and busses. But no idea about Jamaica. Can anyone give me some good descriptors or maybe a photo? Mostly, I'm just trying to figure out if the busses will be comfortable enough for a 1.5 hour drive from Mo Bay to Negril. Are the windows big or small? Are the seats cushioned or hard? Cramped? Air cond. or good ventilation,... that sort of info. Thanks a bunch. -Jeremiah

Should I be worried?  (7 Answers)

Having just read through the 'Warnings/Dangers' pages for Jamaica on this site I am now very worried about my impending trip to Ochos Rios in Jamiaca. Tales of high crime and hassle have put me in a mind of wishing I hadn't booked up. Is this an over-reaction to a few unfortunate incidents or should I really just have gone somewhere else.? Oh - and it's my honeymoon! Thanks, Mr.G

Getting around western Jamaica  (3 Answers)

Hi everyone My girlfriend and I are going to Negril in a few weeks. It was her birthday gift from me. I'm going nuts trying to figure out the best way to get around. We're landing in Mo Bay on a Friday and I'm trying to find the easiest, most comfortable (and safest) way to get from there to our Hotel (Samsara on the cliffs). I'm afraid that I'm a bit spoiled, having had such an easy time with the govt-regulated taxis on St Martin. Any suggestions? Would a tour group such as Barrett be able to pick us up or something? Can we hire a guide or a Taxi in advance? JUTA/Mini-/Tour-Bus.. What are the differences? Or am I over-reacting? Maybe it's not that difficult to pick out the "red license plates" on taxis. I don't know. I'm getting desperate, though. Thanks in advance for your help.

Eloping!  (1 Answer)

Hello! My fiance and I are eloping to Jamaica and have narrowed down our options to two choices. We need to stay in an all-includive resort and also need a place that can perform weddings with little hassle. We're thiking of either staying at the Grand Lido in Negril and taking a day trip to Ochi to swim with the dolphins, and see Dunns Falls etc. OR We're going to go with the Couples Resorts, which offer the "Double Take"...3 days in Ochi and 3 in Negril. Does anyone have any experience with either resort, or have suggestions on which package to take? Any other suggestions on where to visit are also most welcome! Thanks!

My friend and I are 2 women in our early 20's looking for the best nightlife oriented vacation spot in Jamaica. We want an area with a variety of bars with dancing, preferrably on the beach. All the reviews I have read don't offer much about local hotspots. I need a little help here. Thanks!

Never been to Jamaica, looking for some tips  (4 Answers)

My wife and I just booked a trip to Jamaica. We have never been to the Caribbean. I am just looking for some tips on what to see and what isn't worth checking out. We are staying at the Starfish Trelawny Resort, which I believe is between Montego Bay and Ocho Rios.

Barrett Adventures-anyone used them?  (4 Answers)

Has anyone used the services of Barrett Adventures (Carolyn Barrett) while in Jamaica? We're booked with FunJet for our hotel/air package to Negril so the resort will probably steer us to their tours which would be with a larger group so I thought if we booked something in advance at least we'd have a smaller group. I thought the Black River and YS Falls trip looked interesting, any other one we should consider? Have already been to Dunn's River Falls and rafting on the Martha Brae on our last trip. Thanks!

Montego Bay - Resorts  (8 Answers)

My boyfriend and I are looking to go to an AI in August. The TA reccomended Sandals-Montego Bay. We are in our late twenties/early thirties. On vacation, we do like to drink and have fun , but by no means be in a setting similar to spring break! I was wondering if Sandals MB would be a good choice. Also, what is a nicer resort, Sandals Montego Bay or the Sandals Royal Caribbean? Does Sandals Montego Bay have a lot of pool space? I read that people complained of crowded pools. Also, what is Breezes like? I heard it may be a bit like spring break/singles. Lastly, after some research I found Sandals Montego Bay is very close to the airport and the planes are very loud and come very often. Sorry for all of the questions - I would appreciate any feedback from anyone who has stayed at any of these resorts. Thank you.

Montego Bay vs. Negril  (8 Answers)

I'm trying to plan a short break to Jamaica in March, got to get out of the cold here in Chicago. We went to Montego Bay last year, stayed at the Sunset Beach Resort. I was going to book the same trip, either Sunset Beach or Sandals Royal Caribbean, as we enjoyed it but was wondering about Negril which we didn't get to last time. I'd like to stay at an AI with good food where the crowd is a little bit older, the mood a little quieter, where we can snorkel from the beach and the water is calm and clear. Am I better off staying in Montego Bay or is Negril a better option? From what I read it sounds like younger, college age folks gravitate towards Negril, esp. in March over Spring Break. Thanks for any advice!

safety off the beaten track  (6 Answers)

I've received so many warnings about travelling/camping/exploring off the beaten path. Can anyone who has actually tried it in Jamaica give me a realistic sense of how they rated their safety comfort level. Specifically, can you hike the Blue Mountains; explore the Cockpit country; hang your hammock on a non-resort beach; set up camp anywhere; be without a guide? We are a Canadian couple, both 26 yrs old. HOW BAD IS IT?
