Me and my partner are travelling to Jamaica in October and after reading the reviews I'm wondering if we made the right decision to go there
Jamaica is a big place. Where are you planning on going?
Were are staying in ocho rios. We were thinking of hiring a car and doing some sightseeing on our own but after being told by a friend (who is Jamaican) and reading some reviews were are wondering if this is safe to do. Although we are staying AI we would really like to get out and about in the surrounding areas and experience the culture of this country without being herded about on a tour bus
Different people have different comfort levels, I know people who have gone there and driven and were fine, personally I wouldn't as the Jamaican roads and drivers are a little too dangerous for my personal comfort level plus they drive on the opposite side of the road than we are used to. We have hired a private guide to take us around several times, a little more expensive than a group tour but with the ability to stay as long or as little as you like.
I wouldn't cancel your trip though, I've been to Jamaica about a dozen times and have never had a problem.
Thank you I think I will research some local tour guides :-)

Try the cruisecritic boards, a lot of people who come in by cruise ships hire private guides or small guided tours. There aren't cruise ships in every day so you might catch them on an off day.
