Southern Italy in August with small children?

We are thinking of going to Southern Italy, including possibly Sicily or Sardinia. Our children will be 7 and 4 1/2 by the time we go. However, we are a bit worried that it would be too hot for them in August? Is it manageable? Also does it get very crowded? We wouldn't want to stay in a big resort or any kind of complex, would prefer to be in a villa not too far from the coast. Would welcome any advice on whether this time of year is good, and if so, which area to aim for which would be good for children.
