If you have, how did you like it. Which hotel did you stay at? Did you rent a scooter or car? Can we use a bicycle for most of our travels on the island?
Tell me everything?????
I was stationed there from 1992-1993 on the western part of the island (where Green Beach is located). I am returning for the first time, this time for a vacation with my wife. We chose the Evamer after looking at I think every single available option. It's one of the more expensive accomodations (we're paying1500 for a week in May. When I was living there there were no hotels on the island, but I believe now the BBH is the only real "hotel". Everything else are small inns or individual villas.
I would DEFINITELY recommend renting a Jeep as opposed to a scooter or bicycle. The terrain is hilly, especially inland from Esperanza. Many of the beaches are only accessable via Jeep or on foot, but it's a serious hike.
Overall I chose to return to Vieques after visiting other islands due to it's lack of commercialism and the most incredible beaches in the world. If you're looking for a casual vacation without TV, phone, etc, Vieques is the absolute best in the world that I have found. Plus if you want to get back to "civilization", it's a 20 minute ride to San Juan or Vieques by plane. We're planning 2 day trips, one to St. Thomas to shop for the day and one to Old San Juan.
I'm hoping the island hasn't grown too much in the past 15 years and is still the quiet little piece of paradise I remember.
Thanks for the information. From what I can tell by the info on the net, its still very laid-back.
