End of May this year we'll be in Indonesia (Java/Sulawesi ). One of our must sees obviously is Borobudur. I understand it is possible to go in very early (around 4 am) to see the sun come up on the temple. Our hotel (Roemah Boedi Private Residence ) is supposed to be close to the monument.
I wonder if we can simply reserve a taxi the evening before and go toward the temple. Is there any special ticket or arrangement to get in to watch the temple at that time in the morning??
Sounds like you need to reserve a ride to the tourist office to get there on time.
I looked at your hotel website and it is 15 minutes by tuktuk. I am sure that they will be able to arrange transport for you, or it would probably be cheaper if you contacted a tuktuk driver yourself. I was in Borobudur back in '83 so i guess the surrounding area would be unrecognisable now.
As i know, exclusive ticket is sale by Manohara Hotel, and the hotel exist beside of Borobudur area.
I visited Borobodur last August, and stayed at the Manohara hotel, which is on the temple grounds. We went up to Borobodur for sunrise, but the views were not really good until about 20 min after (the flat earth, nominal) sunrise time, because only at this time did the sun really appear behind mount Merapi, and started shining a warm morning glow on the temple.
I don't think it makes sense to go much earlier.
If you can cancel your booking at the Roemah Boedi I suggest you do so and book the Manohara instead. It's price already includes the entrance ticket to the temple, and it's on the temple grounds, i.e. easy walking distance. In contrast, the Roemah Boedi is about 3 km from the temple.
Manohara Hotel is the hotel which located inside Borobudur temple compound, it was one of popular accommodation around Borobudur, another popular accommodation is "Aman Jiwo", a beautiful resort with beautiful view of Borobudur temple, another popular one is Roemah Boedi Private Residence, a lovely javanese style residence.
Manohara is just in walking distance to Borobudur temple, while Aman Jiwo is a luxury resort in the middle of a village, about 15 minutes drive to Borobudur temple and Roemah Boedi is also located close to to the village and about 15 minutes drive to Borobudur temple.
Roemah Boedi also arrange a sunrise watching over the shadow of Borobudur temple, Mount Merapi and Mount Merbabu, .... the traveler could see a beautiful sunrise from a hill side called Punthuk Setumbu, a popular site to watch sunrise early in the morning and you could rent a car to watch sunrise from Roemah Boedi.
According to Manohara's website, entrance to the temple is included only 06.00-17.00hr ie. usual opening hours. For sunrise or sunset, an inhouse guest is charged IDR 250.000 each time.
