Apologies - I think this subject has come up a bit before but I couldn't find a definitive answer. I am hoping to drive a rental car from Cancun through Guatemala, crossing from Belize at San Ignacio. The car insurance is not valid in Guatemala but I definitely want to have protection - does anyone know of any specific places I could buy rental car insurance for 5 days near the Guatemala/Belize border? (Or anywhere at all if not near the border!) Many thanks - any help would be greatly appreciated!
I am a Canadian moving to Guatemala City and I am looking to join a group driving through Mexico to Guatemala City sometime in late September or early October 2016. I figure safety in numbers eh. :)
Thanks a bunch,
My husband and I plan to spend a couple months in Guatemala with our small dog and are wondering which area will best suit us. We are mid 30's and my husband teaches yoga and meditation. I am a designer and would like to work with local artisans to make my designs. We live in Downtown Los Angeles, but also love to be in nature. We are total wimps when it comes to weather, so if the climate is different in these two areas that would be something for us to consider. Our housing budget is around $1000 per month for rent alone. I would love suggestions on where you think we should consider and why.
We are taking our first tour to Guatemala this November and will arrive in Guatemala City. We will be staying in Guatemala City for three nights over a 10 day stay in Guatemala. We have a question concerning exchanging US dollars for Guatemala’s currency. Are the ATM’s safe to use at the airport or banks? We are staying at Barcelo Guatemala City Hotel. What should a meal approximately cost? Also, is there any good restaurants near this hotel? Many thanks to everyone that responds.
I am hoping to go to Guatemala for 3 - 4 weeks in August, which I realize lands right in the middle of rainy season. I was wondering if I should be concerned about going to guatemala during this time? Given the circumstances with work and school, this is the only month I can really go, as I will finishing work in July and beginning school in September. I really want to take a trip like this, but my locations and time frames are limited. From what I've gathered, the weather will still be nice, but when it DOES rain, it will dump, and it will rain a decent amount; but I have also heard that this makes the area look very green!
As I this is my first backpacking trip, and I will be doing it solo, I'm hoping to stick to hostel tours and expeditions for the first while. Will there still be a large back packing community there during this time?
Just an idea on where I was hoping to go: Antigua, Florence, Tikal, Semuc Champey, Lake Atitlan, and essentially any other place that pops up along the way. I was also thinking of spending a week in Utila, but that is a secondary goal.
Any advice on this or the region in general is appreciated!
What is the cost of a case of agua pura in Guatemala?
We have been thinking of taking a tour to Guatemala & Honduras area. However, the Chikungunya virus is becoming epidemic in these countries and we are in our later years. To help determine our risk of contracting the virus, could you tell us if anyone has contracted or been a group that someone has contracted the virus? Also, we would be in Guatemala City, Tikal, Panajachel and Copan Honduras. Would these areas be fairly safe from mosquitos and potential illness (using insect repellant and proper clothing)?
Hello, We are a family of 4 travelling through Guatemala and were considering driving part of it. Is there a reasonably priced rental option? most hire companies seem expensive

What kind of sports do you play in Guatemala?
Does anyone know the locations of Casinos in Guatemala, what the Casino names are so I can look them up .on line. I'm looking for Casinos that frequent Americans, Canadians. small versions of Los Vegas type w/a comfortable atmosphere. And if any located near the Beach Resorts as well.

I will be overstaying my 90 days by a week or so, due to medical issues (broken arm) - that is something to look at but while looking online it seems that there is only a 90 day visa for the CA region, I was coming from Nicaragua where I stayed two months plus a few days transit in Honduras - does that mean I have serious overstay now? Thanks, Jean
Now I am on to accommodation in Guatemala, it is our honeymoon, so we don't want to necessary stay at the shared dorms at the youth hostels, but equally we have 5 weeks and cant afford luxurious accommodation every night. Any accommodation where is worth staying? any recent gems that you discovered? we are planning to travel around Guatemala and we love nature and adventures, we love to be off the bitten track as well as in quirky artistic places, we dislike crowds and things over the top! Recommendations would be appreciated.
We have tried websites but everything seems so expensive, especially when in euros or pounds, is it going to be cheaper to look for accommodation over there? this is something that we would usually do... but would be good to know what sort of prices we need to be prepared for. thank you
with my husband we are traveling to Guatemala for 5 weeks. can you please advice what is a good and adventurous but on a budget way of traveling across this beautiful country? we like our independence and seeing less touristy places. is renting a camper van a popular thing to do?

HI - I am on Atitlan and I am interested in spending a night or two in Mazatenango for the carnival. I do not have a car, I would be arriving on bus (probably chicken, I imagine.) The normal hotel sites do not list anything there. I would certainly want to reserve because this is the most important carnival in Guatemala. Also, does anything know exact details for getting there, would I get a bus at Los Encuentros, for example? Or is there another plan? (please don't say private taxi, I can't afford it). Thanks for the advice, and information - Jean
I bought a beautiful pair of pants in Pana, a deep brown color. got them home to wear and they turned my legs a very nice tan color. any tips on how to seal the dye in?
We are heading to Guatemala; Antigua Guatemala (2 days) and Lake Atitlan (staying in San Pedro la Laguna for 7 days) in early 2014. Any suggestions of places we should not miss? While we will primarily be there to participate in a photography workshop, we should have enough time to poke around and will be looking for things to see and place to eat.
Is this doable and fairly safe night time taxi route?
I am planning to take a bus out of Guatemala to Tuxla, possibly from Lago Attilan. Is there a bus connection and how long does it take?
Just looking for some tip or info on places outside of Antigua, more in the country if you will.
I plan on studying Spanish during my trip to Guatemala. Do I need a student visa?
we are a family of 4 traveling to guatemala this december for 3 months. we are needing places to stay on a shoestring budget. would like to be around the $10-$15 a night. where can we stay?
Hi everyone! I'm heading to Guate for the first time in about a week. My plane gets in at 5pm, which unfortunately is past most shuttle times leaving to Xela and I'm supposed to be meeting a friend there. I've never traveled in Central America before, don't speak Spanish and am starting to think I was a bit overzealous in planning this trip.
Any recommendations about how to make it to Xela in one piece?
Thanks in advance and happy traveling!

I am planning a trip for this June to travel from Belize city into Guatemala and down into Honduras. We plan to fly out of the island of Roatan in Honduras to get home. I have done a lot of research on others who have been in this area and not too many people talk about it being unsafe. Does anyone no about safety issues in these areas? Can they be avoided with common sense and standard precautions?
Does anyone know if there are travel trailers, campers, etc. available to rent in Guatemala? To either drive or pull.
