Appreciate your comments/advice on proposed itinerary for Rim to Rim GC  (6 Answers)

Our family (myself, wife, 2 kids ages 16 and 13) are planning a Rim2Rim starting at North Rim on Aug 25 over 4 days. Given the very high heat, we plan to hike ~7-8 miles in early morn, then get to our destination, set up camp, rest, and do some short walks around the area. We are all fit and active, and the kids are used to long mountain hikes, although in fairness, not in this sort of heat. We are in no rush and want to enjoy this at a relatively leisurely pace.

Our Itinerary is as follows:
- Aug 25: hike from North Rim to Cottonwoods Campground. Then visit Ribbon Falls
- Aug 26: Cottonwoods to Bright Angel CG. Lunch at Phantom Ranch. Short walk on Clear Creek Trail to Tonto Platform. Ranger program at Bright Angel CG.
- Aug 27: Bright Angel CG to Indian Garden CG. Walk to Plateau Point for sunset
- Aug 28: Indian Garden CG up to South Rim

A few questions:
1. We are planning to start by ~5am each morn and reach our destination by 10am. Is this early enough, or should we be looking to start even earlier? The two days where I am thinking earlier might be necessary are Day 2 (when we will across the Canyon through the Box) and Day 4 (when we are hiking up Bright Angel Trail).

2. We are taking 2 tents - I know many folks do not, but given we are camping at the North Rim the night before we start, we don't really have a choice. We have purchased 2 fairly light tents (around 4-5lb each). And a bunch of other hiking accessories like Camelbak Water bladders, pocket stove, collapsible vessels, etc. Aim is to keep each backpack to 20lb max. Does that sound reasonable?

3. Aside from the side trips above (Ribbon Falls, Clear Creek Trail, Plateau Point) and dipping in the Creek, are there any other things we can look to do while in the Canyon? e.g. other small hikes, activities, etc.

4. We are not staying at the Phantom Ranch, but I am assuming we can buy lunch at the cafeteria - is that correct? Do we need a reservation?

5. I expect to take a lot of video in this "trip of a lifetime". I have a couple of spare batteries for my camcorder, but do you think we could recharge at the Phantom Ranch? We are not staying there, but (say) do you think the Front desk could help us if we left our camcorder and charger with them while we have lunch there (subject to 4 above)?

6. We've read a fair bit about the need to enrich our water supply (in bladders) with electrolyte powders. Any suggestions on whether we shd be doing that? if so recommendations? we also saw some electrolyte capsules out tehre to be taken with food but are confused how to take those safely so as to avoid depletion.

Thx Vijay

Las Vegas day trip to The Grand Canyon. Recommendations for something special?  (11 Answers)

Hi. I would very much appreciate any suggestions on a Trip for 1 day or part of a day from Las Vegas to The Grand Canyon.

There are just the 2 of us and we will be celebrating a very special occasion whilst we are there.

We have been told that a helicopter trip is a good way to see the Canyon but I don't know where to start on what is a good company to do this with, as there seems to be so many.

We've also been told that a jeep tour is good fun too.

I hope that the people on this site can help again. It is always appreciated!

I saw that Papillon tours are the official people that do this- are there others? Any good family deals? Do they generally leave from Las Vegas?

Smooth Water Rafting - Closest pickup point from Trailer Village RV Campground  (17 Answers)

Coming from the UK, we will have no other transportation apart from the RV, which we do not want to take out of the Campground during our stay. Can anyone tell me who the CLOSEST outfitters are to Trailer Village (South Rim) that operate a 1 day smooth water rafting trip in July? Alternatively, are there any taxis that can pick us up at Trailer Village and drop us at the meeting point (wherever that will be!)? Any assistance greatly appreciated!

1 way helicopter ride from the bottom of the canyon  (7 Answers)

i'm planning a Grand Canyon trip for my parents. They can handle the trail down to the bottom / colorado river via the Bright Angel trail, but likely not the hike back up the next day so I'm looking for an helicopter tour that starts at the bottom, tours and drops them on the rim. has anyone heard of that? A few searches dont show anything in that line only tours from/to upper rim. Any help welcome !

My daughter wants to stay at the Grand Canyon ranch for a night at the west rim. Has anyone been before.
We have been to the the south rim before so we know the west rim isn't actually the n.p. but would quite like to see the sky walk.
Any tips.

Thanksgiving at Grand Canyon 2013  (6 Answers)

Hello, my family & I will be driving from Vegas to the South Rim on Thanksgiving day this year & will be staying at Yavaipa lodge inside the park for the night. We planned on leaving vegas early so as to arrive at the canyon in the afternoon to enjoy the rest of the day there. My kids are between 6-13 & I will also have my parents with me, thus would like to know which hike or places we can visit that is easily accessable. Also is there any good dining recommendation for thanksgiving dinner aside for El Tovar? I heard it's good there but can be pricey giving our large family. The plan is for us to get up early to catch the sunrise the next morning, doing more sightseeing around the area then head back to vegas to spend the night there before heading back to LA on saturday. Also is there anything to do at night in the park after sunset? I heard it can be really dark there. The trip to the canyon is rather short thus any tips to see the best points with our limited time there is greatly appreciated!

Best south rim hike for visitor afraid of heights?  (3 Answers)

Geology-loving daughter has a depth-of-field vision problem that makes her very nervous near steep drop-offs, but she really wants to see look up at the canyon walls from a moderate way down. Is Bright Angel the best trail for her? She'll have a walking stick, which helps her feel anchored.

GRAND CANYON/BRYCE/ ZION?? what to do  (10 Answers)

My husband and I are planning touring CG Bryce and zion but only have 3 nights in late October . Out of LV cant decide whether to go LV - South Rim- Bryce- Zion LV. OR LV Zion-North Rim -Bryce - LV. Both seem like long distance but North Rim looks slightly less distance. Also I notice that there may be road closures after mid Oct on North Rim Access. We can leave LV at crack of dawn on Day 1 but need to be back in LV Aafternoon/Evening of Day 3 to take plane to SF. Can Anyone suggest best route and best things to see. We both like shortish hikes (mx 1hour) good views sunrises/sets. Which is better North Rim or South Rim? Thanks for any help/advice

1 night stay and self drive to south rim from vegas  (9 Answers)

We have a big trip to America next year (April/May) and are debating what to choose for the last few days. We will be in LA and are thinking of getting a flight to vegas, renting an suv and going to the canyon. How long does it take to drive? I've been told 6 hours? It's pretty long and we would quite like to stay overnight (suggestions?).

We would head there on the 15th May - not sure if the North rim is open and/or a better option?

Really like the idea of taking things at our own pace, seeing the sunset, having a bit of a road trip. Then back to Vegas for last 2 days.

I looked at the heli options but am a bit nervous about this! Also quite fancied the open road!

We would have travelled down the west coast from san fran, and are debated this trip for the last few days against carrying onto San Diego - very nice and chilled but we want to make the most of our trip.

Grand Canyon in December  (8 Answers)

We are visiting Las Vegas in December for 6-7 nights and we want to do the GC as well as Hoover Dam.

I'm starting with a blank, I know it can be done in a day on a tour as I am a UK travel agent and book this often but we prefer to self drive - hate buses and my son is Autistic so doesn't do well with group travel. We can stay overnight if need be but we are not into hiking so the easiest way to get to the best views is the best idea! I believe that there is a viewing platform made from glass? Is this worth a shot?

If we stay over night we could possibly do 2 areas of the Canyon, is this a good idea? Is there anything else in the area?

Finally if we don't self drive is the helicopter worth doing from Vegas? Or even the helicopter from the canyon itself? Is is likely to be busy during these dates?

How long is the drive and if overnighting is it OK to combine it with Hoover Dam?

Any advice would be great!

Best Rim and Helicopter Tour  (7 Answers)

Hello all, at the end of august we will visit the Grand Canyon. We doesn't wanna set a date yet. Is it possible to book a helicopter tour when we arrive. What is a relaible and good company. What are the prices? From the forum responds I read the south Rim is the most interesting. Does it have a address for the navigation? Are there interesting places in the neighborhood to spend the night?

Kind Regards,

From Argentina to Miami - Grand Canyon - LA!  (57 Answers)

Hi! we are a couple of friends from Argentina, traveling to meet the Grand Canyon and the West coast. We arrive at Miami, and the idea is to fly to Phoenix, rent a car, drive to the grand canyon, then Los Angeles and up.

We have tons of questions so any advice is very welcome! Mainly:

1) is phoenix the best location to fly to?

2) how long our stay on the GC should be? For now, we booked 3 nights.

3) it is OK to go with a car? we are unsure about this, if there will be snow, etc, etc

4) I was told to take a look at the hoover dam, sedona, the famous route 66... I just don't know in what order :)

Please, any advice is very welcome! :)
