Ideas and options

Finally got our trip for next February sorted. Driving to Denham by hire car and accommodation there rented for 3 nights. A few questions to help with planning what to do.

Presumably the road from route 1 to Denham and on to Monkey Mia is metalled and suitable for a rental car?

After leaving Denham we have 7 days to get back to Perth. Is it worth trying to work in a couple of days each at both Kalbarri and Geraldton?

Is it best to travel the Perth-Geraldton sector on the new Indian Ocean Drive or stick to route 1?

Where else on the new highway is worth a couple of nights?

The road to Monkey Mia is sealed, so no problem at all. There are some off-road tracks but there you can even get stuck in the sand with the best of 4WDs.

I would stay three or four night in Kalbarri to explore the national park. Two nights would be enough for Geraldton (which in fact is just one day) - I cannot really remember a lot of this city but just about every minute of the time spent in Kalbarri.

The road from Denham to Monkey mia is excellent sealed road.Denham is a nice little village/town. Monkey Mia is overhyped. My thoughts on your planned trip is that you have allowed too much time over a small area (relative to travel speeds and what there is to see)and that you could go much further afield in the allocated time.It is of course relative to car rental / mileage, how much you like outback driving and what you plan to do. Kalbarri and the National Park is the highlight of the trip and worth 2 nights. make sure you go to all the lookouts in the Kalbarri national park...spectacular views.Geraldton is a nice town and worth a look around for an hour or two. An overnight stop in geraldton would be optional. The small coastal towns along the indian Ocean drive are worth a look (Dongara, Jurien bay etc) and the Pinnacles in the national park at Cervantes are a must see.5 days from Denham to Perth would be quite leisurely let alone 7. The weather will be hot for your visit but you will enjoy the wishes

Having talked about the excellently sealed road from Denham to Monkey Mia, it has to be mentioned that in the Kalbarri NP the road to Kalbarri is sealed but the roads inside the national park to all those fantastic lookouts are NOT sealed. In good weather conditions they are surely suitable for normal vehicles - but we were happy that we had a 4WD.
