I will be in Georgia next month and I'm planning to visit Svaneti (Mestia) and South Ossetia (Kazbegi) region . I have read in an other forum these regions aren't safe .
I don't know is it false or true . What do you thik about ?
Any suggestions will be appreciated
first of all, kazbegi isn't south ossetia, but it's near of Georgian south ossetia autonomous republic. if you want to see kazbegi mountain (mkinvartsveri 5034 m. hight), it's not dangerous at all. you can go there from tbilisi didube but station by bus or minibus, and stay in hotel or in guest house. people are good there.
but if you going to South Ossetia territory, yes it's dangerous, becouse it's conflict zone, and my advice is don't go there (after "Truso" gorge is south ossetia).
And about svaneti, it was dangerous place for tourists several years ago, now situation is improved, but anyway my recomendation is to take georgian guide.
Many thanks for your advise .
Probably I will change my travel planes .
but if you come to Georgia, my advice is that you should see svaneti. you have to take risk and go there. becouse there are most amazing places and you don't miss to sight it.
Ok . So I need a guide . Do you know them ? [original link]
Yes, I know them and they are reliable. Svaneti is the most beautiful place in Georgia and the people are wonderful. It depends on your budget of course, but you can also go to Svaneti (or any place in Georgia outside Abkhazia and South Ossetia) by public transport. In Mestia you can find this place to stay: Nino and Eka Dshaparidze on Stalinstreet 20. Maybe there are other pensions by now. Transport from Mestia to Ushguli can be hard to arrange or expensive, but worth the trip. In Ushguli accommodation is available too, but better call in advance. It will take 2 days from Tbilisi to reach Mestia, with a stop in Zugdidi. After Zugdidi the road gets terrible and you drive 20km/h at places.
No. i don't know them, but you can fluently contact one of them or which our friend basvanderveen advice to you: Nino and Eka Dshaparidze on Stalinstreet 20. I'm sure all of them are riliable.
In my country, and espetially in mountain Region People love their guests, and we have such exspresion: "stumeri gvtisaa", and it means that guest comes from god... So Welcome
I am georgian but from Canada.
My husband never been in Svaneti. He is uzbek. We have two little children and planning to go to Svaneti, Ushguli for 2 days. What do you suggest is it very difficult to go there with two small kids? Or maybe you can give my any advice where to stay in Ushguli or how to get there. I heard that we can get there by helicopter. Is this a true and is it safe?
several minutes ago i called to my friend in svaneti and asked your question. he sayed that helicopters aren't flying yet, and doesn't know if they will fly or not in summer. he adviced me from tbilisi or from kutaisi bus station by minibus go in mestia, and from mestia to ushguli (25 km) you can easily go by bus, or minibus or take taxi. for children difficult might be long way only, but i think anyway you must go there, becouse svaneti's air for everyone and espetially for children is fine.
and what about accomodation in ushguli, it's little town, and everyone in this town has guest houses, so you can easily find there guest house. and if you will have there some difficulties, i will give you my friend's mobile number (+995 99 779006 guram gazdeliani) , if you know georgian or russian language you can call him and he will help you. he lives in mestia, but he knows a lot of people in ushguli so he can solve any problem if you will have it in svaneti.
if you will have other questions ask me.
