Hello, I'm staying in Funchai for a week in February when the carnival is on. Can anyone tell me the best places to see it and what I should do as while I'm there.
Visit the Madeira wine lodges and try some of the wonderful, fortified, sweet desert wines and the unique heating process that gives Madeira wine its long shelf life and unique taste.
We did this on our visit to Funchal and still have a few bottles we picked up there.
This would depend very much on what your interests are. Some of the places in Funchal that i can recommend are -
1 The cable car ride up to Monte. From here you can then visit Monte Palace Tropical Garden and Jardim Botanico.Choose a clear day for this as the views from the cable car are fantastic.
2 Visit Jardim de Santa Catarina.A nice park (free) with good views over the harbour.
3 For an interesting farmers market visit Mercado dos Lavradores.A great place for mixing with people from all over the island.Situated in the centre of Funchal not far from the cable car station.
4 Visit the Old Blandy Wine Lodge. This gives you an introduction to the history of its unique wine. After the tour you can then sample the different wines.
For more places to see i suggest you click on Travel Guides (top left hand corner) and enter Funchal or Madeira.
If you need the name of a great place to eat you won't do better than Armazem do Sal [original link]
I totally agree with this comment! Just be aware that you will need to book a table well in advance.
If there is a bit of rain, you can do some indoor activity. Such as Escape Game ([original link]) or Laser Game ([original link]). But it really depends on your taste.
