Funchal

One day visit

As I only have one day here, is there a small train or tourist bus that goes around the city to see the highlights. Any other suggestions would be welcome. Thanks Lois

I can only imagine that you are on a cruise! If so and you are visiting Funchal, Madeira then I recommend that you use the "Hop on Hop off bus",which is a good way of seeing Funchal in a limited time. These buses can be found by the marina, which is a ten minute walk from where the cruise ships arrive. Check out these sites : [original link]/tours/portugal/funchal and [original link]/en/cities/funchal

Yes, there is a hop-on-hop-off-bus there and the Price was 16 euros a day in May 2013.
From your ship you will have to walk maybe 1500 meters to the port-gate and about 200 m more to walk to a small, artificial lake with a park next to it and the Tourist-info and that is where the bus will start !
I really enjoyed the tour, that will take you also to places that would be too far away from the citycentre to walk on your own.

Oh, I forgot: in case that you get there on a SUNDAY:
the famous chapel uphill with the tomb of the austrian emperor will Close at around 01.00pm every sunday , AND also the famous sleds will NOT run afterwards on a sunday !
So, in case that you dont want to miss that: Take the bus as explained above, and leave at the Station of the cablecar , go uphill by cablecar, see the Botanical gardens etc., then go down again and hop on the bus again !
The gardens and the cablecar is running all day Long also on Sundays !
