I can absolutely recommend this hotel

It is within walking distance of main attractions and overlooks a park

I've always stayed near Santa Maria Novella railway station (less than 10 minutes' walk from the Duomo) and, imo, it's a good base.

I stayed twice at the Hotel Delle Camelie, set in a very quiet area:

and, most recently, at Hotel Angelica just across from SM Novella:

But Florence's historical centre is compact and very walkable indeed so anywhere within that area ...which includes Oltrano (the south bank of the Arno):

....would be a good choice.

The only caution I'd give is to avoid anywhere located near prime visitor spots such as Piazza del Duomo, Piazza della Signoria, San Lorenzo market, Ponte Vecchio, Uffizi Museum....simply because the area will be full of people for much of the day and into the evening. :-)

As well as airbnb look at the reliable and long-established It has extensive listings in Florence and excellent mapping, plus reviews which can only be posted by people who have booked through the site and completed their stay.

We stay in a nearby small village, drive to a bus stop and park free for the day and take the bus into central Florence. It's easy to use their public transportation so I'd say stay where you like.

The central part near the train station is very nice and easy walking to nearly anyplace touristic. The buses start at the train station so you can easily bus anywhere in Florence (or surrounding area) or take day trips by bus or train if you stay near there. It's very easy to get around so stay central if you can.

Enjoy your trip.

I stayed at hotel Collodi and I liked it much. It is not far from both the train station and the cathedral.

Here's my tip about that hotel; [original VT link]

Enjoy Florence!
