Gwened: your second link is to a file you have downloaded onto on your own computer (that's what the 'C' means). It will not work for anyone else.

1.'Very easy at the airport or train station or tourist office' isn't very clear. I think you mean you can obtain hard copy route maps at those places? That may be the case. There's certainly an ATAF office at Santa Maria Novella station and the main tourist information office directly opposite *may* have route maps, but whether they are free or not I cannot say.

2. Ken: There is NO Metro in Florence, only buses and a couple of trams (to the suburbs). Most of the tram system is still under construction or just at the planning stage:

en.comune.fi.it/administrati...

3. Florence's historical centre is compact and very walkable. If you can walk, and assuming your accommodation is within or near the historic centre, it is very unlikely that you will need to use a bus at all, other than for getting up to Piazza Michaelangelo (and visit the exquisite San Miniato al Monte) or to Fiesole.

4. The official ATAF bus website in English will give you a schematic of the route for each bus:

ataf.net/en/timetables-and-r...

5. There are also sections for the 'town centre' (by which they mean the Medieval heart, where only small minibus-type buses can travel:

ataf.net/en/timetables-and-r...

and the airport shuttle:

6. You can find a map of bus routes which serve the historic centre here (scroll down):

visitflorence.com/moving-aro...

and if you google 'florence bus map' you'll find images from several other sites.

7. Remember that you need to buy tickets *before* you board the bus (from newsagents and/or tabacchi ) and validate (date-stamp) them using the machine inside the bus *as soon as you get on*.
