Hi, my wife and I are visiting our Aunt who lives in Eureka in May, we can only manage a weeks vacation so are looking for the best way to get there, we have been to Eureka previously, drove up from San Francisco, but because of the short duration of the visit would like to fly, costs seem rather high from SFO so would welcome local insight if possible. Thanks in advance for your help

Alaska http://www.alaskaair.com has direct flight from/to Los Angeles(LAX) and Arcata/Eureka (ACV). Also from Portland, OR (PDX)
I hope it helps you.
I'm not aware of any low-cost flight options for this route (they all seem to be ~$400pp/RT right now), but two other options...
1. Greyhound bus: http://www.greyhound.com
The ride is about 7 hours each way (from S.F.) and the cost is96 RT for both of you (i.e.48 ea/RT).
2. AmTrak: http://www.amtrak.com
The ride is still about 7 hours each way (again, from S.F.) but the cost is180 RT for both ($90 ea/RT).
They don't save time, but might save money (rental car + gas is now3/gallon in CA) and stress (let someone else do the driving).
A longshot idea: call United (the major carrier SFO-Eureka) and see if you can use miles and how many are necessary to purchase your tickets. Then, assuming you don't have United miles, go to a frequent flyer miles barter site and see if you can acquire the necessary miles for less cost.
