Hi - I am an adventurous and experienced traveler but I am also an older woman traveling alone. It looks like they have lifted many restrictions and most people who go there are doing ok. I am not a fearful person but I am wondering about the general atmosphere and if I would be presumptuous about exploring places on my own. I am used to jumping on public transportation and getting to sites independently. I do not drive and do not have the budget or desire to go with a guide. Would this attitude and approach be unrealistic, though, in Ethiopia? Thanks!
I heard of fresh travel advisory and anti-govt protests. Is it safe to visit in the next 2 months? I heard even Lalibela is unsafe now in the news. Can someone confirm or let me know the ground reality? Thanks!
Hi guys! I wonder about current safety situation in Ethiopia with current riots and military activity. A friend or friend working in Addis begs us to cancel the trip, I want to know more opinions from locals and tourists who are there right now to make a decision.
I want to visit Ethiopia with my wife later this year, but at this point we are struggling to overcome the visa problem. I am Slovenian and my wife is Bulgarian - both states are NOT on the list of tourist generating countries, which can obtain a visa upon arrival to the Bole airport. There are no Ethiopian embassies in Sofia or Ljubljana, and our email requests for information to embassies in Ankara, Berlin, Budapest, Vienna, Geneva and Rome remained unanswered (we did receive a reply from Budapest that they issue visas only to Hungarians, and from Berlin that only Germans, Poles, Czechs and Slovaks can apply there). Can anyone help with an advice? If you are also from a "non-tourist generating country" which does not have an Ethiopian embassy, how did you obtain a visa?

3.Im thinking of staying In Mike leyland st As it has some cheap accomadation is this safer than the Piazza Merkato areas?

Hey Guys sorry for another post here.I have not booked my flights yet.I am thinking of going south to the omo Valley (It Looks Amazing)how would I get there is the bus service good in Ethiopia?I won't be driving myself and would probably not have the budget to get a driver.
Is it Okay to get around by bus and is it safe?.I was thinking of a route over my 2-3weeks Going south from Addis Ababa
Arab Minch National Park
lower Omo Valley
Bale Mountains (Is there Trekking)
I would like to See the Waterfall In Bahar dar But I dont know If I would have time.I relly would appreciate anyones advice on my itinerary I am A bit nervous Going on my own.Thank you very Much.
I am thinking of going in April for about three weeks is the rainy season in full swing at this time.In 3 weeks is that a decent amount of time to see some of the main sights. It looks Amazing :) I dont know where to start.
We would like to get a feel for the area south of Addis Ababa, but unfortunately we do not have time enough in our itinerary to fully explore the Omo Valley. It looks as though flying into Arba Minch and spending a couple days to see Dorze and Konso might be a satisfying substitute-- providing a chance to plug into some of the regional tribes and a chance to see the terrain in that part of the country. Does anyone have a reaction to this idea? Is it a worthwhile excursion? Is it reasonable to spend a day each striking out to Dorze and Konso respectively by bus?
I'm travelling with my husband on a pre-booked tour of the tribal south next week. It will just be the 2 of us. We will have a driver and guides at the various places that we stop at. Hotels have all been booked. We are using an Ethiopian travel company. My question is...roughly how much should we tip the driver, he'll be with us for 2 weeks, I think, and how much for guides? We can't seem to get a sensible answer from anywhere!! Being told a driver's tip should be between $50 and $200 is not much use!!! Can someone advise me please? We need to be able to budget...
I will be travelling to Addis from Oct 15 for about a month, on a business trip, hence will mostly be working in an office (and not a tourist) , walk to the hotel and probably spending some nights out for dinner and the like. Could you kindly share with the level of security, safety from both people or health-related issues please.

Hi, I'm planning a trip to the Omo Valley and february and:
Is anyone interested in sharing a tour (we are a couple)?
How much should it cost a 6-7 days tour in the Omo Valley?
Hi, i'm going in Dire dawa for work. Does somebody have any guidelines about life in Dire dawa? Is it safe, what are things that i have to be carefull about? Tnx
Can you please recommend a car hire company? I keep getting quotes for car hire + driver, and I would like to do a self-drive to the Omo valley.
I'm transitting through Ethiopia for a work trip at the end of September and decided to take a week vacation in Ethiopia. I'm lookin for suggestions on what to do. Here is my current itinerary:
-Sep 25: arrive in Addis from Juba
-Sep 26: meet with some friends who live in Addis but are only in town thru 27th. They have a business that I am interested in seeing. I anticipate seeing their business during the day, and checking out Addis in the evening.
-Sep 27: meet with friends who live in Addis but are only in town thru 27th. Will probably spend day seeing their business, and checking out Addis in the evening.
-Sep 28: morning flight to Lalibela, touring churches
-Sep 29: Morning hike to monastery above Lalibela? Drive to Axum?
-Sep 30: Spend day in Axum
-Oct: depart Addis at 10:15pm
A few questions:
1) I hear that there's a great monastery to hike to in Lalibela that is not a part of the 11 churches. I was thinking of doing this the day after touring the churches. If I did this though, I'd miss the flight to Axum that day. I could stay an extra night in Lalibela, or could I take some public transport to Axum in the afternoon?
2) how much time do I want to spend in Axum
3) how easy is it to travel from Axum to either Lake Tana or Bahar Dar? If I added one of them to the itinerary, what should I add?
4) Should I go from Axum to Tigray? How easy is that?
5) it seems that Meskel holiday will be in Lalibela September 27. Is this correct? Will it be hard to find a hotel? Also, I was planning on arriving in Lalibela on Sep 28 so I could spend time visiting my friends and their business in Addis on Sep 27. Should I ditch that to see Meskel holiday? Is it a once in a lifetime experience?
6) There's a developing possibility that my work will ask me to stay in Ethiopia for a meeting in Addis October 8, which would give me more time in the country. If this happens, what do you recommend I add to my itinerary?
