My friend and I are planning on buying a one way ticket and stay in Mexico for a few months. He will be doing a diving instructor course and then try to find a job. But how much does it cost per month to stay in this area? Is it easy to find cheap food? What can we espect to pay for renting a small place? At this time we have been mainly looking at Cozumel but nothing is decided yet. Is there a big difference in prices depending on where you go?
Hope someone is able to answer this! Thanks in advance
Is it safe to drive around the Yucatan (Cancun to Valladolid, to Tulum, to Akumal, and back) at night? Our flights get in very late at night (around midnight) and leave very early in the morning (around 7am). We'd love to avoid having to stay in a hotel at the airport, but don't know if that's feasible as I've heard the roads are not very well lit and thus signs would be hard to follow--and we've never driven there before. We would plan on renting a car.
Speaking of which--does anyone have any good recommendations for the best/cheapest company to rent a car from at the Cancun airport? I've read that prices that American car rental companies quote online are only that cheap b/c they don't include the required insurance that you have to purchase. Any car rental advice would be great. Thanks!
We will be staying in Puerto Morelos for 4 days in late July. One of those days we want to do an excursion. There are 4 of us traveling ages 32 - 44. We are into history and adventure. We want to do something that is fun and we will learn something. What do you have for us????? Links or travel reviews would be appreciated.
Anyone familiar with Hotel Antillano? If yes, how is the nightlife in that area?
Has anyone gone on their own to Isla Holbox by taking the ADO bus to Chiquila and from there the boat (outside the tour stuff). Which good hostels/inexpensive accomodation there would you recommend? Gracias.
We are planning a family reunion type trip to Akumal in Feb. We are looking at these 2 Jade Bay villas. Does anyone have any experience/info on either?
Thanks as always!
Me and my wife will be staying at the Occidental Xcaret in Carretera Federal Chetumal - Puerto Juarez Quintana Roo in the 2nd week of April. Need suggestions for safe all-inclusive day trips to explore mayan culture/ruins, adventure (ziplining), or any other outdoor activity.
Thanks in advance
I'm travelling from belize up the coast on the bus. My aim is to stop a night or 2 in tulum. However I'm looking for suggestions if there is anywhere others would suggest to stay that are little hidden gems up the coast line or islands.
I have only a few nights before I have to fly out of cancun and I've no interest in staying in cancun.
I'm a single female traveller so any advice on places to stay and where to find good grub would b much appreciated.
I'm looking for a private ecological resort or retreat in the Caribbean part of Mexico. I'm looking for something little secluded and unique, not like a mainstream beach resort. Does anyone have experience or suggestions?
Going to Cancun for a dive trip in mid-November. For my "pre-flight surface interval", I plan to rent a car & visit Tulum and Coba on 14 November (Sunday). Any other VTers going to be in the area then, who want to share a ride to the ruins? Reply to this post or send me a VT email.
My husband and I along with our two sons aged 15 and 12 are going to be at the Grand Serenis at the end of March. We are looking for fun things to do that you can reach by collectivo. Any suggestions?
Wife and I are planning on a week someplace along the Mayan Riviera. She wants all-inclusive. I want to be able to hear the surf at night. We both want great snorkling within walking distance. We do not want nightclubs, bars, discos, nor the noise and crowds that they generate. Any suggestions for particular towns, beaches, or hotels/resorts?
So far, I have the general impression that the nightlife is mostly concentrated in Cancun, and it gets quieter and more sedate as one goes southward. Is this correct?
We are going to the Mayan Riviera next week, and sure enough, the weather forecast is showing scattered t-storms during our entire stay, fromk 30% chance to 60%. What should I expect? Are the rains typically happening at one time of day, throughout the day? Are we going to be completely miserable? ;-)
I'm thinking of renting a car and seeing parts of the Yucatan. I'd like to be on Holbox for 2-3 days but since you can't drive there, I was wondering how safe the parking lot is in Chiquila? Is it ok for overnight parking? Or is it better to just take the bus from Cancun and rent a car when I leave Holbox? Thanks!
I'm looking for a place to rent for 2 to 3 weeks this summer that can accommodate up to 18 people or more, by this means having 18 beds as the people would be single and not sharing beds..
Something nice, with pool and maybe palapa outside, and preferably a big area out side.
It can be on the water (beach or lagoon) or in the jungle but not in a normal neighborhood, has to be somehow exotic.
I found a ranch that says it has its own cenote, but i haven't get in contact with the owner..that would be something cool.

Planning to visit The Yucatan during March break (March 11 to March 24) backpacking with family. Went to Cuba last year and did similar trip. Made no reservations and "winged it" which worked out great. Enjoyed the flexibility, etc.
Is this possible in the Yucatan or will be be at a disadvantage given that it's Spring Break?
Backpacking with family in March around the Yucatan Peninsula. Considering camping ........(?).
Anyone with experience camping in this area? Good idea; bad idea? With respect to equipment to bring, are bugs/mosquitoes a problem?
how is the weather in cancun right now? Beside the Ike not hitting Cancun, is there any other storm in Cancun or a threat for Cancun this October?
Does it rain everyday over there? Please advice ... Thank you.
Hi, I need to travel from Chetumal, Quintana Roo to Cancun and I was wondering if there is a bus service or shuttle service that would transport me. What are my alternatives? How long would the ride be and how much would it cost approx.?
I wasn't able to search the forums using hotel names, so I could not find any comments on Aventura Spa Palace. I think this is the right region of Mexico, but I'm not certain. Has anyone visited this all inclusive adult only resort or know anything about it? I heard from a co-worker that it is wonderful, but I'd like to get some information for other sources. Thanks.
Question 1: Xcaret or Xel-ha. Two of us like snorkeling, two like the sand and wandering around.
Question 2: Instead of the popular ruins of Tulum and Chichen Itza would Coba be better or is there other ones that are not too far away.
Question 3: Tour bus, taxi for the day or car rental for a trip to the ruins.
Question 4: We are staying at the Mayan Palace any comments about it ?
Thanks to all who answer........
I've read some comments about cancun but nothing about Tulum Town.
Is Tulum Town really bad damaged?
If it is, How long do you think is going to take to be reconstructed?
Has anyone rented from Easy Way rent a car? They are saying they will deliver a car in Merida and let me drop it in Cancun for a very good price. Because they are not a large international company, I don't know what kind of reputation they have. Any help is greatly appreciated.
My wife and daughter are looking for a "beach vacation". They just want to hang out at the beach, probably do a little snorkeling, and most of all . . . feel pampered! We're looking to avoid a lot of the crowds typicaly associated with the Bahamas or Caribbean.
We're looking at Ambergris Caye in Belize. It seems like a nice place but small and it might get a little boring after 3 or 4 days. Is it possible to: fly into Cancun. Take a boat to Cozumel. Stay there for a couple of days. Then take a boat to Ambergris Caye?
Any advice or comments would be appreciated. Also open to other suggested itineraries.
So, please tell me what is the price range on a decent hotel hotel in tulum town.
I want some with A/C, clean and close to the bus stop.
Thanks in advence for your reply.
I'm looking for a hotel in Tulum; nothing fancy between40 and80.
I'm thinking in the town of Tulum, Thank you.
We are a Family of 6. 3 adults and 3 teenagers.
We want to have family time together and have some down time and some active days!!!
For example - the kids have already highlighted a list I gave them. I will list those below..but I was curious what are the MUST DO's from you guys.
We are going to scuba dive one day. (probably cozumel - 3 of us will scuba while the other 3 check out cozumel).
If we just one to go see one set of ruins which ones should we see and would you suggest going by ourselves or with a tour. I have seen info on going to Tulum and seeing the ruins there. But know it will be an all day trip.
Other top things on the kids lists are:
Zip Lines/Canopy Tour
Whale Sharks (yikes)
See some Ruins
Of couse I don't think we can get do all the above - especially money wise. I have done some research on the above and checked tour companies, but I would love some feedback.
What tour companies would you recommend for the above activies? Or would you recommend doing some on our own? Or are there specific drivers??
Would you recommned Xel ha or another ecological park? Are they still in natural settings or do they seem more like a park, and the fish are captive (turtles etc).
If we just one to go see one set of ruins which ones should we see and would you suggest going by ourselves or with a tour. I have seen info on going to Tulum and seeing the ruins there. But know it will be an all day trip. Should we try to make it to Tulum and/or Akumel?
I am going to be looking into if we should rent a car (minivan0 or use shuttles and have the tour companies pick us up. If anyone has suggestions on that - it will be helpful too.
I know I am asking for a lot, but sometimes researching with the vendor/tour companies you still never know.
Hello all! We want to spend the night in Chichen Itza in a couple of weeks and then spend the day in Valladolid. For the life of me, I can't find Valladolid on Ticketbus or the ADO website. Our hotel is in Cancun, and I don't want to get stuck in the middle of nowhere (I can do that in Nova Scotia!) with my lame Spanish skills. If anyone can give me an idea where else I might look, I'd really appreciate it. Any suggestions about good food in Piste and Valladoid would be great too!
I am planning to travel from Cancun to Playa (stop off at Cozumel for a day) and then make my way back to Cancun, hopefully via Valladolid / Chichen Itza all starting from March 12th for about 10 days. Was wondering
1) Is it worth renting a car for the entire journey, or just for part of it as a single female? ie.. how common are banditos?? and where would you recommend hiring from initially as I will probs be bussing it straight from the cancun airport to Playa
2) How busy will these area be during Spring Break (except Cancun).. should i be booking ahead for accommodation at hostels?
3) Know of anyone travelling in my direction at the time?
Anyone can ask a
