Road trip December  (30 Answers)

Hello!
My husband and I are deciding about traveling to Emilia Romagna in 2 days. The weather forecast seemed much better a few days ago but after checking it today, the surprise was not very good... Of course it will be cold but what worries us most is the rain as we were thinking on renting a car to visit several towns.
The plan was to fly to Venice to pick up the rental car there. we are not staying in Venice. From there we'd visit Padova, Ferrara, Mantova, Piacenza, Parma, Modena and Ravenna. We were thinking on sleeping in different locations along the way, instead of having a base in one place only. The departure flight would be from Bologna.
Our main question is: should we be worried about drive/road conditions? Are there some segments to avoid? Should we be prepared to icy roads or are they mainly in the high regions? We've never drove in the North so we are a bit uneasy after checking the weather conditions.
Regarding these towns, does someone have any particular recommendation?
Thank you very much for all the advice you can give us!
Best,
Tânia

Best of the region  (3 Answers)

Good day everyone,

I will be in the region of Emilia-Romagna next week and wanted to get your opinion on what the highlight/must-see places of the region are. Our interests are quite varied and range from beautiful coastal towns to charming hilltop villages. We have a car so traveling around the region is quite possible for us.

Many thanks in advance for all your recommendations!

Cheers,

TravellingCA

2 night stay in transit  (5 Answers)

I will be driving from the Lake Como area to Porto Ercole and would like to stay two nights along the way and need some options. I was thinking of Parma to enjoy the food but am considering a smaller village in the mountains as an option.

Any ideas?

Thanks
Wilby

2 brothers traveling  (4 Answers)

My brother and I are planning a trip of a week to 10 days in Emilia-Romagna in early fall 2013. We are active seniors and our interests are food, history and local culture. I can get by in Italian. We'd rather take public transportation to places but will consider limited driving. We'd love to tour prosciuto, cheese and vinegar works and museums in Parma and Modena. Would appreciate suggestions about central location and side trips. As foodies, we'd especially appreciate info on restaurants. Has anyone tried a Home Food meal there?
Thanks.

Where to stay in Emilia-Romagna this summer?  (4 Answers)

Folks,

Two couples looking for a central location to stay in Emilia Romagna for three days early in August. Interested n the local culture and food. We assume local B & B though small hotel might work. We have a car and will spend at least one day in Bologna, but think we best stay outside the city.

We've been looking at Parma and Modena and if that makes sense, then can you suggest specific B&B, or hotel. Thanks in advance.

Ostellato - Comacchio - Pomposa - Delta di Po  (5 Answers)

That's what we planned to see on our way from Ostellato to San Mauro Mare: Comacchio, Abbazia di Pomposa, Delta di Po - any tips? Is it too much for 1 day? Comacchio and Pomposa might be for sure, regarding the delta di Po, we're not quite sure what to do there - we like going for a walk, but not hiking. Thanks for your answers in advance.

Good Travel Agency  (2 Answers)

Can anyone recommend a good, reliable travel agent specializing in the Emilia-Romagna/Venato areas? We would like to rent a car and make moderately-priced hotel reservations for a 2-week trip to this area, starting with a ferry from Croatia, probably to Ancona, and ending in Venice.

I'm visiting Modena/Bologna in Oct and would like to do some balsamic vinegar tasting one morning. Can anyone refer me to a place where I can do this? All I have found were "tours" for 130E per person - suddenly the vinegar got very sour!!

Thanks a bunch,

Flying to Forli for 3 days, what would you do/see?  (4 Answers)

Hi,

I bought a ticket to Forli for 3 days (22-25/05) without really thinking what I wanted to do/see... besides eating :P

I thought of spending the entire 3 days in Bologna but now I'm thinking that I could use some rest by the beach.

What would you recommend I do/see and how can I get from Forli to those places. I'd like to add that I'm a single, that I like some historic sightseing and that want to sleep in hostels :)

Local private guide/driver wanted  (4 Answers)

I am in the infancy stages of planning a trip to Emilia-Romagna. My wife and I are interested in Local Color: local markets, local foods, off the beaten path restaurants, etc. Does anyone know a local guide to hire. Tentatively we will be traveling in Sept. or Oct. of 2010.

Hotel recommendation for day-trips in Emilia-Romagna and Tuscany?  (7 Answers)

We're planning on spending 5 nights in Emilia-Romagna for touring in a rented car the following locations in Emilia-Romagna and Tuscany:

Bologna
Rimini
Ravenna
Volterra
Florence

We'd prefer not to stay in a large city (like Bologna), but are not against it, if it's the best choice.

I don't see any locations between Bologna and Florence - any suggestions?

Thanks,
Bert

Train from Bolonga to Milan and then to Linate or Malpensa Airport ???  (5 Answers)

I need to pick up a rental car at either Malpensa or Linate airports in Milan. I will be taking a train from Bolonga, Italy to Milan. Which train station should I arrive at (Please name: I think there are two Centrale and Porta Garabaldi) to make the best connection to either of these airports? I need to know the name of the train station I should arrive at complemented by the best Airport pick up site and then how to best get to that Airport(bus, shuttle etc.) Timing is important. I will immediately be leaving Milan to travel south,so the easiest exit from the city ring and the less confusion the better. PS. I need some really precise answers here, and will not be offended by anyone "dumbing it down". Many thanks.

Beaches on the West coast  (4 Answers)

I'm trying to organise a beach trip for a few of my friends for this weekend. We all live in Parma, but I've heard that the west coast is nicer than the east. I had previously planned on going to Rimini, but have now been warned against it. I'd ideally like to limit the travelling to around 3/4 hours by train. Any suggestions?

Slow train from Piacenza to Venice!  (2 Answers)

I have a tight schedule, and I need to make a round trip from Piacenza to Venice in one day. I made a search at Maporama, and it showed me if I drive a car with 100km/h speed, I will take less than 3 hours from Piacenza to Venice.

However, when I tried to see the travel time by train, it takes about 3 & 1/2 just to Veneto, and 4 & 1/2 to Venice!

So, it is 3h by car but 4 &1/2 by train. What is your expereince on driving in that route : Piacenza, Cremona, Mantova, Veneto & Venice. Where can I park the car before entering Venice?

Day Walks in the area

We are planning a weeks stay in the area, based possibly in Ferrara in September. We like to do day walks of up to 20km and welcome some suggestions. We are reliant on public transport, and as such we usually catch a bus/train to say one spot and walk to another and catch a bus back or else do a circular walk. We see that places like Bologna, Ravenna, Modena, Rimini etc etc are all within the area so perhaps there may be some interesting walks based around some of these places.

Good base in Emilia-Romagna?  (3 Answers)

My wife and I are going to spend 3 nights in Emilia-Romagna and would like to which city we should use as our base. Parma? Bologna? Ferrara? Modena? Also, which cities do you recommend we visit given our short stay? We have access to a car and don't mind driving to see the sights. We prefer quaint, historical towns over modern cities.
