Hello - I am traveling in southern Colombia (in the countryside now) on my way out and to Ecuador, and I broke a front teeth and need dental work fast. I wrote to my embassy expecting some kind of reference and the reply, in bad English, was that they had no references. This is not normal. Can anyone recommend a good dentist or advise me on how to get in touch with some kind of American (or European) citizens' groups in Quito? This is urgent, thank you!
H Jean, gee you get around! sorry to hear about your tooth! ive sent an email to someone on Trip Advisor who mentioned they had gone to a dentist from the plac the stayed at
Hi gwened - look again - I DID contact the embassy as I said - and they said there was no list, which I already saw on the website. American embassies are not very helpful to their citizens, in general. Angie, that was sweet and smart as usual. I also wrote the person, we will see if there is a reply. That post was recent too!
fingers crossed :)
Here is some information on dental care in Ecuador from the organization International SOS, a medical and travel security assistance company:
Dental care is improving on a yearly basis. Still, there is great variation in standards for instrument sterilization and quality of dental care in Ecuador. The quality and safety of dental care cannot be guaranteed and should be reviewed carefully prior to selection of provider.
There are several facilities in Quito that now achieve a reasonable level of multi-specialty care in state of the art facilities with well qualified, English speaking dentists and staff. More and more dental staff in Quito have United States training.
For acute dental pain while in Ecuador, see a physician for pain control Then obtain definitive care in a well qualified Ecuadorian facility or your home country. Contact your International SOS for referrals.
For medical care, iSOS recommends these facilities in Quito...Maybe someone at one of these hospitals can recommend a dentist:
Hospital de los Valles
Av. Interoceanica Km 12 1/2 y Av. Florencia
Frente a la Urbanizacion La Primavera I
Quito, NA NA
Telephone: 593 2 2977 900
Hospital Metropolitano - CONCLINA C.A.
Ave. Mariana de Jesús y Occid.
Quito, Pichincha 1701
Telephone: 593 2399-8000 Ext.2114
Quito, Pichincha NA
Telephone: 593 2 2262 142
iSOS did not have any recommended dentists on their website. Good luck.
I'm sorry to hear about your tooth! I have never been to a dentist in Ecuador (but to a few hospitals). I had a look in my guidebook (Rough Guide from 2013) and they recommend these dentists in Quito:
Dr Alfonso Arcos Baraona, Av Republica de El Salvador 525, Edificio Roasania, 02-2457268
Dr Victor Peñaherrera, Amazonas 4430 and Villalengua, 02-2255949
Have a look here too:
Thanks everyone, moving along here. I cannot see contacting all those hospitals but here are some dentists listed - definitely US training! First hand ref is better, I will keep trying to find away to get in touch with the American community. Wonder if there is a yahoo group or something - very useful....I am in a bad situation for sure.....
There are two yahoo groups, one open, one closed. Waiting to see how it works....
Thanks, gwened - but the calendar is empty, though! I always thought meetups were for romantic encounters - I guess because I knew a woman who was always frenetically focused on such! Maybe I was wrong but I see nothing happening. And the situation is urgent! But it is sweet to keep trying.
What about this one? [original link]
Ok, but nothing seems to be going on in Quito with Meetup! I just applied to Internations but I saw an article of theirs - researching dental tourism - I did not like. It was very vague, no precise info, and gushing with all is great kind of positive sentiments, which is suspect. Trying to sell something!
