With your help (thank you) I have put together an nine day itinerary for our February trip to Ecuador. After taking a look please let me know if this looks reasonable given travel times within the country:
Feb 9 night spent in Quito (driver to Cotacachi)
Feb 10, 11, 12 in Cotacachi (and exploring this area) (Fly to Cuenca)
Feb 13, 14 in Cuenca (driver ????? car rental???? to Montanita)
Feb 15, 16 in Canoa and Montanita (driver ?????? to Quito)
Feb 17 in Quito and fly home the 18
If you have a driver you really liked please let me know. We will be staying in VRBO/airbnb accommodations throughout except in Quito where we will stay in a hotel close to the airport - any recommendations?
Thanks to everyone who shared your experiences with me. They were of such help.
The only hotel I've stayed in is the Hilton downtown. It is very nice.
I can't help but comment that if you are coming so far (assumption from your Profile home location) for a trip to Ecuador, why not take a few days to travel over to the Galapagos as well.
Why would you stay in Cotacachi? While i think Otavalo is overrated, Cotacachi is just boring.
I would love to visit Galapagos but because we have such limited time I felt that visiting there would take half of the full time we have, so I decided to make that our next trip. If you think it can be explored properly in a couple of days please let me know.
I appreciate your input.
I am staying there to visit Otavalo. Otavalo looks beautiful and it has been recommended by many people and articles.
Galapagos can't be explored in a few days so you do the right thing to save it for another trip. With only nine days (including travel days) I would skip the coast. Ecuador is not known to have very beautiful beaches. I have never been to Montanita as it is considered to be a party town so I have avoided it.
I was also wondering about Cotacatchi. Why did you choose it as your base?
Yes. Otavalo is very popular. Seeing as there are many hotel option in Otavalo, transport is more readily available and there's a wider range of eating options, Cotocachi seems like an odd choice. Don't get me wrong, it's a popular little place too and staying out in Cotocachi will be quieter (at least at night) but it's also much less convenient.
Thanks.....Cotacachi changed for Otavalo for accommodations...not so much into boring. Any suggestions re drivers?
I have travellers in Ecuador five times (all togheter 34 weeks) but have never used privat driver (lm using buses) so Im sorry I cant help you with that.
As for information I was not at home when you asked your last question, and I am not at home right now. Im on holiday and Im only using a slow mobile to answer. If I had been at home it would have been different. Sorry you find it boring with too little information.
I must apologise, because I missread and thought it was boring with our lack of info. Sorry!
By the way, on my profile page I have a long list of links to all places I visited during my first four trips, with tips and photos.
WOW I wasn't saying the answers to my questions were boring.....they were great and so helpful I changed my original itenerary. I was answering one of the posts that told me a place I had planned to stay was boring so I simply said that I am not into boring, so changed to a more interesting city, which was a couple of people's recommendation. Thanks for your reply and I hope you have a wonderful holiday. Sorry for the misunderstanding.
