I would love to take some surfing lessons but I read that September is not the best month for surfing – so what does it mean, is surfing impossible at all?
Also, I read about “garua” – what kind of weather should we expect in September on the beaches (Canoa, Bahia, Puerto Lopez?)
garua just mean a little raining usually in the morning but then the weather improves, so surfing is ok with that weather you can ask directly to them, They are on the site [original link]
Hi there! I am a surfer and live in Canoa. The best months for surfing are of course in the high season, December - April but Canoa is one of the most sensitive beaches for waves, so there are waves most of the year. It is hard to say for sure what the conditions will be like during that time because it is off season and so the weather and waves are not consistent, however, if you are a beginner, it should be no problem. There is almost always something to catch and ride in Canoa, even if small and longer waits between sets is the case. As far as learning to surf, it may even be a better time of year to come because the waves are generally smaller and so you don't get smashed quite as much by them. The weather is a bit colder at this time of year which is something to consider as well. Sometimes from Sept-Nov surfers wear spring wetsuits but if you're used to cold weather, you probably won't need one. Also, this year the water temperature hasn't dropped as much as it usually does around this time of year, because of the presence of the phenomenon del niño. You may want to consider bringing or buying here (you can find in the local surf shop) a long sleeve rashguard though, as it is the season for jellyfish. Some bites sting more than others and there is no long term reaction apart from itchiness the following few days but to avoid discomfort, it is a good idea to wear one. Although, once again, because of the el niño, we have not seen many and probably will not see as many as usual this season.
Bahia and Puerto Lopez are very nice beach towns to visit for sightseeing or a more cultural experience. You may make it for the tail end of the whale watching season in Puerto Lopez and Bahia has a cool lookout spot, a museum and a few other nice attractions that are worth seeing. However, as far as surfing goes, I would definitely recommend Canoa. Both Bahia and Puerto Lopez do not get many waves in general, especially at this time of year. There are also less options for lessons and rentals. Canoa has a few options for surfboard lessons and rentals. I would recommend Blue Fish Surf Shop for lessons and shortboard rentals and the cyber cafe Surf Rider for longboard rentals.
Feel free to shoot any other questions my way..
Cheers and enjoy your trip!
