Our schedule does not allow us to cruise the Danube all the way from Melk to Krems.
If we only have the time to cruise half the distance, which segment is the most picturesque?
There is almost nothing to see between Krems and Duernstein, there are vinyards and flat landscapes.
The best par stars in Duernstein, then Spitz, St. Michael etc. and at the end of the cruise, shortly before you arrive in Melk there is Schöhnbühl castle and Ruine Aggstein, like shown on the photos by Kahrin E.
There is another thing quite important when you are in a hurry:
In Krems and also in Duernstein you actually dock in town and the train is easy to reach at least by taxis that you find closeby.
In Melk it makes sense to order a taxi in advance to collect you at the ship, walkingdistance to the next trainstation there is about 50 min.
In order to save time it also makes sense to take the ship downstream from Melk o Duernstein, the ship is much faster tha way, you will find taxis or a bus at the station to take you to the ship
Thank you [VT member 1ffe4].
We had been advised that there were no taxis in Durnstein. If there are, that will be great.
We will cruise downstream from Melk to Durnstein, and then take the bus back to Melk . From the timetables, it appeared to us that the bus will also stop at the Melk train station. Can anyone confirm that?
Uli / lotharscheer is the expert about (not only) taxis in Austria and I saw his comment in the other discussion, so you should NOT count on a taxi there ! It could be that the taxis I saw were ordered to wait there.
About the bus: Yes, most tourists in Dürnstein want to go by bus to Melk station, this bus is also the connection of 2 diff. trainlines divided by the Danube.
Melk BAHNHOF is the station
Duernstein OST is in a distance of maybe 700 meters from the landing.station and you can take a flat walk along the Danube, or - more scenic through the village.
Duernstein WEST is a bit closer and also possible to walk along the Danube
