Prague to Rome

In September I will be flying into Prague, renting a car and driving to Rome and back to Prague . I am interested in scenic drives, interesting places to stay and eat (not too expensive). I'm more interested in small rural villages than larger cities, I would like to hike some, meet locals and see odd and unusual places. I will have two weeks to make the trip. What countries should I drive through, what stops should I make?

Kind of an obvious route to take is Prague-Cesky Krumlov-Salzburg-Villach-(maybe a side trip to Slovenia for rural scenery)-Udine-Venice etc. In Austria you can just stop whenever you like and spend some time outdoors, since there is plenty of small places to spend an hour or two
