Are you from Australia and used to our roads?

Two parts to this question....safe to actually drive
....safe in your person

Make sure you have a good sound vehicle...communication....tell someone where you are going and when you will arrive...Fill up with petrol (I would check availability of petrol)....have a spare tyre....carry some food and water.....do not pick up hitchikers....maybe you can find a reliable companion

Any lonely road can bring danger probably in most places....just take the usual precautions.

I think it is safe enough to drive as long as you don't pick up hitch-hikers, just stop at gas stations and cafes or establishments with many other customers. But of course it might be a different story if your car breaks down and you get stuck in the middle of nowhere. Just be careful and sensible as there are a few wierdos around!

hi i have driven that road many times although not for about 15 years now. Make sure that you fill up with petrol at Pt Augusta.Coober Pedy is about 600km from Pt Augusta you can get petrol at Woomera which is about 10km off the highway the only other petrol is at Glendambo about 240km from Coober Pedy. Also avoid driving at night as there are a lot of kangaroos on the road at night. Hope this helps

I drove up there last year on my own and didn,t have a problem, have a mobile phone with good coverage and plenty water and food. The road is busy so even if you broke down, no-one is going to drive past without assisting. Have a look at directions on google maps from Port Augusta.
I would make sure that your vehicle is in good order, if towing or retrieval of your car was required it would cost a lot.

Further to my reply, there is Spuds Roadhouse at the turnoff for Woomera/Roxby Downs so you don,t need to drive into Woomera - and there is no service station in Woomera. Also Glendambo. So although it is 560km from port Augusta to Coober Pedy there are fuel stops every 200km or so.
