May be going to Colombia for the 1st time this summer  (3 Answers)

Hello. I live in North Carolina, USA and one of my best friends is Colombian. She and her mother are going this summer and have invited me to go with them. I really want to go but my main concern is safety. From my understanding, Colombia is much safer than it used to be. Many tell me that I would have no problem because I am going with Colombians and because I am also fluent in Spanish (I speak español madrileño) with the Madrid accent and everything haha. They are planning to go in May. My friend's mother is from Valledupar, Departamento del Cesar, Colombia. That's where most of their family lives so we'd be spending the majority of our time there staying with her family. I understand that this city is not the safest of Colombia. Also, we would spend a few days in Santa Marta. We will fly into either Bogotá or Barranquilla. They have friends in Bogotá and family in Barranquilla and we would stay a night or two in either city, depending on which we fly to. They're saying that if we fly into Bogotá, we will take a plane to Valledupar. But if we fly into Barranquilla, we will take a bus. Like I said, my main concern is safety and I need to know the honest truth about the safety of all of this. I will not travel if it is not safe. Also, I know that Valledupar is not a big city with lots of things to do. We will probably be there for 1.5 weeks and I don't want to be bored there. Anyone who has been to Valledupar or who knows it, please answer my questions and I will appreciate it! Thank you!

Panama to Colombia by Boat?  (3 Answers)

Wanting to go from Panama City to Colombia for a few days in Feb. Search on Kayak reveals very expensive flights ($500 USD R/T). Does anyone know of a cheaper way to go? Years ago I had wind of a sailboat from the Caribbean side of Panama to Cartagena but can find no info of it on VT. Any help greatly appreciated.

Weather in June  (2 Answers)

Hello,

I am planning a trip to Colombia, three weeks in June. From Bogota to the Atlantic coast, through the Zona Cafetera, Medellin, Bucaramanga.

I’ve read that the month of June is usually very wet. Is there less chance of rain if I do the trip in July or August? Or the difference is not enough to make the trip in July or August while, for calendar issue, June would be best for me?

Thank you for your input.

jogging/running in Cartagena  (2 Answers)

Hi fellow travelers! I am spending five days in Cartagena next month right before I am expected to run the NYC marathon. I'd like to try to get a few runs in while I am there (nothing too long - 5 miles or so) just to keep active, and am hoping someone might have some suggestions for running routes. I will most likely be staying within the walled city. I saw somewhere that the perimeter of the walled city is about 4 miles. Having never been to Cartagena, would it be possible to run along the perimeter of the wall or from the walled city to the Bocagrande area? Any other suggestions for a safe jogging route?

Thanks in advance for your help.

20 days in Colombia  (6 Answers)

Dear VT members, need your help for Colombia travel with my Colombian girlfriend.
She lives in Manizales so after arriving from Europe to Bogota i should go there first. Unfortunately she can't help much since she didn't travel outside of Manizales.
1. We would like to go to sea for at least one week-10 days so do you suggest Cartagena or any other place? And do you suggest any specific hotel?
2. Was browsing for hotels at booking.com and even found some room with two beds in 5 star hotel in Cartagena for 159$ per night PER ROOM. Now when i compare that with some prices for other locations in world ( in Mexico for example ) this sounds low so i guess Colombia is cheaper than many other countries? Of course we don't need such 5 star hotels, was just comparing prices. Anyway, how much money generally would we need for those 20 days?
3. If we do 10 days at sea and 3-4 in Manizales, where to go in remaining days?
4. And what about airlines in Colombia? Are they reliable and relatively good priced? I'm most interested in Bogota-Manizales and Manizales-Cartagena ( if we do go there ).

crossing the border at Cúcuta

Hello fellow Colombian and Venezuelan travellers.

I am in the planning stage of a trip Bogota-Caracas in January. Now, as I have stated myslf several times here in this forum, airfares BOG-CCS-BOG are ridiculously expensive-almost 500 euros return for a one hour 15 min. airtime. Monopoly of Avianca (Bogota-Caracas) and AeroRepublica (Medellin-Caracas) while Aires suspended (temporarily?) operations to Maracaibo. And Frequent Flyer miles are almost non-redeemable on this route (and I don't have enough Avianca + miles for a return trip; only a one-way)

Now I have been (locally) told to go for an alternative route:

Fly Bogotá-Cúcuta. Then, at the airport, take a taxi to cross into Venezuela to the airport of San Antonio de Táchira and from there continue flying to Caracas. It seems that travel time by car is around 30 minutes airport-airport.
Going this way the total air fare would be less than 100 euros one-way. I verified that already.

Now my question: has anyone used this route? And more specifically: how does the crossing by taxi/car proceed at the Colombian-Venezuelan border, especially as a non-Colombian or non-Venezuelan? Especially the Colombia-to-Venezuela crossing. I will be travelling by myself, alone.

I am aware, of course, of the delicate political situation between CO and VE; nevertheless I noticed that almost always the border crossings at Cúcuta remain open and functioning as normal despite the tensions.

Thanks for any input!

Noel

Colombia Trip Dec 25 - Jan 16  (2 Answers)

I was wondering if I could get some feed back on my rough itinerary from people that have been and know about colombia.

So Im flying into Cali on the 25th of dec. I plan on staying till the 28th and checking out feria de Cali. What is the must see / do events that take place during this celebration? I know there is a huge concert that takes place on the 27th.

After that me and some friends wanna go to Cartagena for New Years. I heard it is a long drive from Cali to Cartagena. If we leave on the 28th would we be able to make it in time? Also would Cartagena be the best place to spend New Years in Colombia? I heard most Colombians stay inside with family. Hopefully we will be able to find some decent nightlife and partying going on for New Years.

After New Years the plan is to explore and see the rest of Colombia ie Santa Marta, Medellin, and Bogota with a few less known/popular destinations along the way.

I fly out of Bogota in mid Jan. How much should i expect to spend on a lower budget ie staying in hostels and eating cheap for 3 weeks in Colombia?

Any advise and recommendations are much appreciated. Thanks

Dash

Visa Overstay  (5 Answers)

I´ve been travelling in Colombia for nearly 2 months and my visa is shortly up. My flight out of Colombia is 10 days after my visa expires - could somebody please advise me as to wether I should renew my visa in the DAS office in Bogota, or, because it is only going to be 10 days, if I can just pay a fine at the airport?
Thank you!

Parque nacional los Nevado - How much time?

Hi,

I'm interested in visiting Parque nacional los Nevado and I'm not sure how long it will take to have look around there. I've seen people making reference to multi day hikes and others doing vehicle and horse back trips in a day. Anyone able to give me an idea on how long it takes to see the park? I would prefer vehicle or horse back over hiking.

Thanks
David

Colombia - basic info  (6 Answers)

Hi guys, thanks for taking the time to read this post - it is my first on this forum so go easy!!

My question is kinda simple but seems to have many different answers so just wanted some people opinions.

I'm planning a 4-5 month trip and wanting to spend some time in Colombia and Ecquador. Excluding a galapagos trip could people give me an idea on how much time is required to do each country justice (I tend to travel quickly but don't want to cram too much into the trip). Is 4 weeks in each country reasonable.

Also, i'm trying to consider daily budgets - read anything from25-60 per day on these forums. What do people think? and what kind of prices am I considering for activities, trips?

Many thanks for any input!

Richard.

Travel to Colombia?  (9 Answers)

Hi, can you please let me know if it's safe to travel to Columbia at this stage? The State Department has a travel advisory against US citizens traveling to that region, but what about the true reality? It would be flying into Bogota and touring for about 1 week.

Thank you!

Colombia at end of June for 8 days  (3 Answers)

I am considering a trip to Colombia and would have 8 days there not including travel there and back... I am thinking of flying into Bogota and home from Cartagena or doing the reverse of that... ( whichever is cheaper)

I was trying to figure out the best way to use our time before booking our ticket...
We want to obviously check out Bogota & Cartagena. We would also like to visit San Agustin & Tierradentro and possibly Santa Rosa or Leticia.

Can anyone point us in the right direction as to the best itinerary for seeing these places and what is the most realistic amount of places to visit in our short time in Colombia. I don't mind buying a couple of one way flights to save some time in getting around the country!

Thanks in advance for all of your help!

Michael

Travel Colombia  (10 Answers)

Hello Everyone:

Can anyone recommend a good and current guidebook for traveling in Colombia? I have looked on Amazon for the usual suspects (Lonely Plant, Let's Go, Fodor's), but there seems to be more bad reviews then any good. HELP!

In addition, I will be traveling alone and wanted your thoughts on how safe you felt, some of the areas that I plan to visit are Bogota, Cali, Cartagena, the Lost City, San Andres, and Barranquilla. Any recommendations on places to stay, areas to avoid, things to see, restaurants?

Thank you in advance!

Claudia

8-10 days in Colombia  (4 Answers)

Could anyone suggest some sample itineraries for an 8-10 day visit to Colombia? Unfortunately my time is limited, but I'd love to see as much as I can.

I'd be flying into Bogota and areas that sparked my interest are: Medellin, Cartagena, Santa Marta, Cali, and obviously Bogota. I would like to be able to visit both the Pacific and Caribbean coasts, but don't know how feasible that would be. This trip would be happening in the next month or two.

Any ideas or suggestions are appreciated!

Puerto Narino (Amazon)  (1 Answer)

Already asked information before about staying in Puerto Narino (Amazon), but no concrete answers till now. Already did some research on the web (like poorbuthappy), and I read that Puerto Narino is the best budget alternative for the expensive lodges near Leticia. So I suppose there will also travellers who visited or know this place.

Anyone (recent) experiences with staying in Puerto Narino? Good places to stay? Good tours from there, names of good guides? etc.

Of course any other recommendations about staying in this area are welcome. Will be there for 4 nights, then fly back again from Leticia to Bogota.

Thanks answering,

Harry

budget for colombia  (2 Answers)

My friends are I will be traveling to Cartagena, Medellin, and Bogota while visiting Colombia in June. Does anyone have experience with the cost of hostels/food/taxis/beer in these areas? currency  (3 Answers)

We are travelling to Colombia in February from the UK. I know I can get Colombian pesos in England before I go but I don't want to take too much cash. Is it best to rely on credit cards to withdraw cash while there. Are traellers cheques difficult to cash there. What is it best to do?

How to get around Colombia & Venezuela on a Budget  (4 Answers)

Hi. I am presently in Brasil, in Sao Luis, in the north east. Unfortunately, I can´t stay and so I want to use this opportunity to see some more of tropical northern South America. I would love to spend as much time as I can in both Colombia & Venezuela, taking in all the topography, climates and culture on my way to the beach, I imagine around Barranquilla somewhere.

My questions are too many so I will just ask for any advice you would give on where to go on a trip from Sao Luis in Brasil, to take in as much as possible, on a traveller´s budget of EUR20 - 30 p/day, of the best of these countries, going from one to the other and returning to Brasil. I would like to travel but also to stop in a beach town/city for a few weeks in both countries.

I did not expect this trip but it is a great opportunity. I have no guidebook, have no Spanish, have no clue about these countries (e.g. costs, transport, safety and all the rest) but I have found out enough to know that I don´t want to miss them.

So if you have any tips or can point me in the right direction to find an easy and cheap route I would be absolutely delighted and very grateful.

Regards,
Dave
