Hi all -
My wife and I are planning to visit Colombia for 10 days next month and need some advice. We like relaxing, beaches, good food and activities (hiking, etc).
We plan to fly to Cartagena and then would like to see Tayrona as well.
Can anyone recommend a) good cities/hotels outside of Cartagena that we should visit? How many days would you recommend at each stop?
We were thinking something like:
- 3 Days Cartagena
- 2 Days Barraquilla
- 2 Days Santa Marta
- 2 Days Tayrona
- 1 Day Cartagena
Any thoughts/comments would be appreciated.
I would drop Barranquilla from the list, there is not much to see there.
in your itinerary I have been only to Cartagena and I can't provide you with thorough advice on your questions but still can share with you a couple of thoughts from my experience:
- Cartagena is a terrific destination for history and culture, it is not for a vacation at the beach. Neither the city beaches (Bocagrande, El Laguito) nor the few beaches nearby and not even the islands off the coast (Islas del Rosario, somewhat oversold as a Caribbean paradise) are in my view worth a great deal. What I was told in Cartagena is that for nice beaches one shall go to Santa Marta.
- Haven't been but I was told in Cartagena that there are no tourist sights in Barranquilla and the city might be worth a stop just for some nightlife. You may want to limit your visit to a weekend-day night.
I have posted a page about Cartagena if you are interested.
Enjoy your trip!
I would agree, drop Baranquilla and add a day at Tayrona. Cartagena is a beautiful city but not really for beaches. The best place for the beaches in this area is Tayrona, where you can do some trekking through the forests to get to many secluded beautiful carribean delights!
i personally would spend only 1 day in cartagena and then go to santa marta and spend the rest of your time in tayrona. its the most amazing beach paradise ive ever been to and it has it all.
only crappy thing is other tourists everywhere. but me and my girl managed to find some seclusion by venturing away from the camp spots so you can get away from the crowds.
