Tourist visa fees for China seem very expensive - what is the best way to apply and how much can I expect to pay?
Instead of going through an agency you can apply by mail to the Chinese Embassy in Australia and of course you would avoid agency fees. I hope the link is up to date!!
Going to the embassy would be the best to be sure that your Visa will be approved and the fee is usually 130 usd for a single entry and 150 usd for multi entry. I have been to China many times and find it convenant for me to get my Visa in Hong Kong thru a travel agency instead thru Shoestring Travel on Nathan Road. They can get it done within a day while I tour Hong Kong and enjoy the scenery.

You can't go to the embassy in most countries these days. the Chinese Government has set up Visaforchina offices where you apply for the Visa. There are offices in brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne. Even when you post your application it goes to the centre rather than the embassy or consulate. Honk Kong may be different (as it always has been different).
That link is only for mail applications from South Australia and Northen Territory. Others have to go through "Visaforchina" in either brisbane, Sydney or Melbourne.
You can no longer get a visa from the Chinese Embassy or consulates in Australia.
Visaforchina is an agency of the Chinese Government and you apply through them excepting if you are in the Northern Territory or South Australia who can still use post. It may still be different in some overseas countries but Visaforchina is the way in Australia.
I just realised no-one had answered re fees.
This is the current schedule
Thank you for taking time to respond to my question.
I appreciate your help in this respect.
