Investigating Bulgaria for 2018. Should I go independent as I had for the rest of Europe or do an organized tour.
I do not drive, so renting is out and I'd need to use public transportation.

Belogradcik, Rila Lakes and cities - 3 questions  (10 Answers)

Hello,
We'll drive to Sofia and spend there few days in the country this weekend. As we drive from Beograd, Belogradcik seems to be logical as first place to visit. Is it possible to explore the region with a short hiking in early November or weather does not permit it anymore? Then we would also like to visit Rila of course, and I was told, Rila Seven Lakes also worth to visit. My question is the same, whether it is possible to go there these days or it is too cold, frozen etc.? We are middle aged couple and in good health, but we don't use to hike with special equipment. Finally, another type question. Considering limited time, we probably can visit either Plovdiv or Veliko Tarnovo. Which one do you believe to be a better choice if we don't have time for both? Thanks,
Tamas

Seven days in Bulgaria  (7 Answers)

We are arriving in Plovdiv on 17th Oct and fly out from Sofia on the 24th. We want to do a bit of exploring, travelling by public transport and would be grateful for any suggestions members may have - including things not to miss and if there are any train journeys we should make sure we take.

Many thanks in advance

Spending money for Sveti Vlas  (1 Answer)

Hi, I'm going to Sveti Vlas with my partner for 2 weeks in August. Our hotel has a pool, restaurants and bars but we only have breakfast included in our package. How much money would you advise taking? We mainly want to lounge around by pools and at the beaches. However we would like a few day out at the water park, nessebar and so on. Not interested in going out drinking.

Sofia airport to Stara Zagora?  (3 Answers)

I am landing at Sofia airport at approximately midday on Tuesday (21st June). I need to get to Stara Zagora by public transport (returning two days later). Unfortunately I speak no Bulgarian and am having difficulty understanding the various travel websites.

Would anybody please be able to advise on the best options and how to buy a ticket (e.g. in advance or on the day), or point me to an English language website which would help me sort this out?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Buying contemporary art in Bulgaria  (2 Answers)

Hi, whenever I visit a new city, I like to buy a painting by an emerging young contemporary artist to take home. I am not referring to the landscape type paintings of familiar or iconic landmarks targeted at tourists but a piece from a proper gallery that is not too pricey. Are there any reasonably priced but well curated art galleries in Sofia showcasing young artists of some promise? My budget is between 200 to 250 British pounds. Or would it be cheaper to buy art in Plovdiv instead of Sofia? All advice and suggestions deeply appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Christmas in Pamporova

Hi guys, my family and I are thinking of booking a skiing holiday in Pamporova for Christmas 2016. We spent Christmas skiing in La Tania, France a couple of years ago and it was everything we could have wished for, plenty of snow and a really good Christmassy atmosphere but we would like to give Pamporova a go as we have skied there before but not at Christmas.
Does anyone know what the snow is usually like at Christmas and also if there are festivities going on over the Christmas period?

Late March in Bulgaria  (5 Answers)

Hey
My girlfriend and I are visiting Bulgaria in the last week of March. Besides flying in and out of Sofia and renting a car, we haven't made any plans yet.
We are looking for somewhere to relax, take walks, eat good food and enjoy life. Preferably somewhere in the mountains. We are very interested in the Bulgarian wine scene, so we'd like to stay somewhere we can visit a few wineries, or maybe stay at a winery hotel. We are thinking about staying two different places, and maybe staying one day in Sofia.
Any suggestions?

All the best,
Peter

First time visitor  (3 Answers)

Hi guys
My wife and I are thinking of visiting Bulgaria next September. We're really fed up with Spain and are hoping Bulgaria will offer a bit more to see and do. Could you give us some advice for two middle aged first timers ?
We're not dead yet and enjoy a good drink, but Benidorm type crap just isn't for us.
We were told to try Sunny Beach, but some reviews reckon it's a bit of a youngsters party spot a la Benidorm etc .
Ideally we'd like to be fairly centrally located with plenty of sight seeing opportunities and shopping during the day and a good choice of bars and restaurants for the night time. Preferably on the coast but not necessarily.
We'd be open to booking self catering apartment or a hotel.
Any advice on areas, accommodation, activities etc would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance
Aidan

Mosquitoes  (4 Answers)

Are there mosquitos in and around Sofia. I am going in September, staying at a hotel - not camping - and have just seen a post saying there were hordes of theem this year. Do I need plug-ins and deet? (I'm one of those people they seem to target).

Sunny Beach or Golden Sands  (4 Answers)

We want to go to Bulgaria next August and didn't know whether to go to Sunny Beach or Golden Sands, we have a 19 year old and a 14 year old. We wanted somewhere that we could go out to bars in the evening but that had some sort of entertainment (karaoke or bands). Also we wanted to go self catering so that we had a room with a kitchenette preferably a 2 bedroom apartment.
Would be grateful for any advice.
Thanks

Where to Find a Dentist  (1 Answer)

Would like to know, preferably from Bulgarian residents, whether I should choose to do dental work in Sofia or should I opt for a smaller city like Plovdiv (cheaper)?
I'm assuming Bulgaria has good, affordable dentistry. Any recommendations?
Thanks!

URGENT!! 15 days in Bulgaria - Please advise

Where to go/stay economically? From whom to rent a car? What to do/see? What to buy? What to eat?

We are arriving at Sofia Airport in the last week of August 2015 with our TWO CHILDREN, 4 YEARS OLD, and would like to rent a car to go around Buglaria, stay at a few (4 or 5) different places for a few days each time in economical hotel apartment accommodation, going out day trips around the area, before moving on to the next place of stay and would be grateful of advice as to:

THE BEST ROUTE TO TAKE AROUND BULGARIA

and "Where to go/stay economically, from whom to rent a car, where to go, what to buy, what to eat?"

Before we return to the airport to fly back home.

PLEASE LET US KNOW AS SOON AS POSSIBLE as we need to make booking very soon now - we only bought the flight tickets so far.

Thanks a lot!

PS - Would it be good/advisable to cross into Romania too - what to see?

Black sea Accomodations - small on the beach  (2 Answers)

The 2 of us are traveling to Bulgaria this July 2105 and we are looking for small, mid-to-high end accommodations on the beach, preferably the southern part of the Black Sea.
Not the family-holiday package accommodations that we see, but more private and reserved....can be an Inn or a B&B or whatever. Traveling with our own car, we are flexible.
Any suggestions or exposing hidden treasures would be welcome

Spring vacation - Stara Planina?  (1 Answer)

Hi -

We've decided to spend our one week spring vacation in central Bulgaria (hopefully enjoying it as much as we enjoy the southern (and higher) mountains of Rila and Pirin... We'll be staying at Tryavna (thanks johngayton for your recommendation), but we actually have decided to rent a car instead of going on public transportation. W'll appreciate any suggestions regarding places that can be reached within less than 90 min by car from Tryavna. We're interested especially in nature and photo opportunities, less in history (unless it's very photogenic... ;) ) Any hidden secrets about amazing natural beauties, scenic drives, authentic ethnographic traditions and locations, etc. will be very much appreciated...

Please keep in mind that we'll be travelling on last week of March - so I guess some of the trails won't be in a good state... (Hopefully we won't get a rainy week...)

Thanks again, Ana.

P.S. As we'll be driving to/from Sofia - any info about interesting places on the way there and back will be appreciated too...

Suggested plan for a spring vacation  (6 Answers)

Hi -

We're about to book a spring vacation in Bulgaria. We've been there a few times already (most spent around the mountains, one at the beach), and now we're looking for a nice place to spend a week - without renting a car. We would like to be able to enjoy the beautiful scenery and maybe some local spring festivals (I heard there's something going on on the last weekend before Easter).
Our first choice would be Bansko - just because we enjoyed it so much last time, in the summer.
Any other suggestions?
We haven't been up north at all (except 1 short visit to Veliko Trnovo about 20 years ago), and we LOVE high mountains (but not skiing!!), spring flowers, local food and local culture. We enjoyed festival at Gela very much last summer.
We're planning to get "there" (wherever it'll be...) by public transportation, and rent a small place (preferably an apartment, or a room at a local family hostel, not a hotel ! )
Dates of travel would be 27th March till 3rd April.

Any suggestions for a tranquil and beautiful place to spend a week at?

Thanks,
Ana.

Trakata or Alan Mak? or Albena area  (1 Answer)

Trying to choose between 2 villas in the above areas but cannot decide! Is one area closer to beaches & more lively than the other? Or not much difference betw the two? Will car hire be recommended? Ideally looking for walking distance to bars & restaurants for evenings, beach & other activities in the day.

Alternative villa options are in Albena area? Any advice much appreciated please, thanks...

Quiet Beach Location  (7 Answers)

I appreciate that Bulgaria is becoming more and more busy as a tourist attraction What we are looking for is a very quiet "village type"resort with small hotels and no night clubs mainly just restaurants and Taverna type places. To be able to stroll peacefully without masses of crowds.

Possibly some Bay along the coast
Don't know much about Bulgaria other than visiting Nessebar on Sunny Beach which was far too noisy and busy for us for our main holiday
