I have to drive from Newcastle to Broken Hill. I know it is more than 1000km and I am assuming it will be at least a 12 hour trip, so I will stop overnight half way.
Can anyone tell me the best route - should I go through Sydney or up into the Hunter Valley and across to Dubbo?
WOuld Dubbo be the best place to stop for the night? And are there many places between Dubbo and Broken Hill to take a break (food, petrol, toilet etc)?
If anyone knows the current price of petrol in Dubbo and / or Broken Hill that would be handy as well.
We went via Dubbo but from the north...the cross roads....We stopped at Wilcannia for petrol and nothing else and stayed overnight in Broken Hill. You might read my page on Wilcannia...it is not a tip.

The best route from Newcastle to Broken Hill is through Dubbo. From Newcastle go up the New England Hwy to near Singleton, turn off and out through Gerrys Plains and Denman,Merriwa, Dunedoo, Dubbo, Nyngan, Cobar and on to Broken Hill.
Have done the trip several from Newcastle and Nyngan is the best all round place to stop to break up the trip.It has all the facilities you need.Cobar is also ok for a short stop the next day.Have a good trip.
The NRMA fuel search results :Broken Hill ULP 154.9 Diesel 157.9
LAst trip we took was from Qld . Over-nighted in Cobar. Stopped for fuel and p at Wilcannia (educational).
I have a sneaky suspicion that Wilcannia should be avoided and particularly at night.
Brilliant, thanks everyone!
Thanks for the excellent route detail gerrypmac, and thanks pedro - I didn't know about that NRMA fuel page, very handy.
And I get the message about Wilcannia.
