Bratislava

Stay in Bratislava or just day trip?

Hi!
I will be going to Europe next year and I am not sure whether I should fly into Bratislava or Budapest.

Can anyone recommend a couple of days in Bratislava? Or is it an easy day trip from Budapest? There is nothing in particular I want to see there, ive just heard it's a lovely city.

If you do recommend staying there, is there also any day trips you like to do into Slovakia? I'm trying to research places at the moment so any interesting/pretty towns would be nice. Thank you heaps!

Hello ;)

I have been to Bratislava this spring for a few days :) I recommend actually two days, not one. Day trip can be too short, If you decide to stay in Bratislava more than two days, it is nice to visit Devin suburb with castle, Trencin, Trnava towns.

Yes, I'd agree that a daytrip is too short for Bratislava though it is a feasible (if rather long) train or bus journey from Budapest (minimum seems to be 2h 45m).

If you make it your base (as I did for a few days last October) I'd recommend a daytrip by train to lovely Piest'any:

and maybe to Trnava:

or Trencin:

Vienna is also a very easy daytrip by train from Bratislava......you can even go by boat, if you are there at the right time of year:

You can find train times and details in English on the Slovak railway website here:

and/or on the equally reliable German railway website:

Bratislava itself is not worth more than a day. Apart from what has already been suggested, I would go for Modra and the Záhorie area which has plenty of nice little villages (wine-producing region), then there is Devín castle ruins just on the outskirts of the Slovak capital.

Unlike Gyuri, I've found Budapest airport to be perfectly ok (and the BUD shuttle from the airport to the city very effective and reasonably-priced). Bratislava airport is also perfectly ok, imo. :-)

I see.... a parking complaint. Parking doesn't enter my consciousness, of course, apart from at the UK end....and I doubt it will matter to the OP either.

All airport food is over-priced, everywhere I've been (and generally of poorish quality for the price). Including UK and US airports. So I just try not to eat at airports. :-)

All I want from an airport is ease of access by public transport and the capability to get me through check-in, security and into the air safely. As long as those aspects are ok the frills, or lack of them, really don't bother me. :-)

We spend 5 days in Bratislava and wasn´t bored at all, but we also spend a lot of time just walking around in the old town taking in the atmosphere. But I would say at least 2 days would be good.
