I sit in my ome town of Skerries, Ireland, planning my trip to Maine in two weeks time. Its a cool autumn evening here but at least we're not getting the really awful weather part of the east coast US is getting. We've booked 1 night in Portland after our drive from Boston and I'm looking very closely at Belfast as our week long destination. Ideally, we want to rest, relax and just enjoy. My husband likes his ales and brew beers and we've noticed that there is brewery outside the town. Can anyone tell me how many (decent?) pubs there are? I've noticed loads about places to get food which is great, but we also enjoy a quiet drink in local pubs, ideally those that serve local ales and beers. Also, roughly, how far is Belfast driving from Portland? And finally, does anyone know of any local places where we might rent for a week? We're still planning so this might all change! My family is considering renting a house near Belfast Maine for the second week in June. We are traveling from locations around the country. One family member lives in Massachusettes and alerted us to the problem with Black flies during May and June. The rental agent seems to think that because the house is situated at a higher elevation, the black fies won't be much of a problem. Our Mass relatives have some experience with black flies at home and are reluctant to join us at our scheduled reunion. What's the scoop? I did read some stories about the flies and they do sound auful. Thanks.
