Basque Country Information Needed-All Advice Greatly Appreciated  (2 Answers)

My wife and I are independent, budget, travelers with a great deal of international travel experience. We are planning on visiting the Basque country for the first time and want to do it as econmically and efficiently as possible. We have a week - ten or more days.

We'll be coming from Paris (flyng into Bilbao) and will be relying solely on public transportation once we arrive. We'll be heading to south of France (flying out probably from Montpellier) after we visit the area.

We're not sure the best way to organize ourselves and what to see (besides San Sebastian and Bilbao). We don't need to run around if we are able to find a good base to get a feel of the area and/or for day trips.

Our biggest challenge is finding a reasonably priced, simple yet comfortable accomodaton. We know San Sebastian is popular during the summer season but we are rather knocked out by the sky high prices.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Bermeo-Mundaka  (5 Answers)

Hi) Me and my friend are planning the trip to Basque region in September and will stay in Mundaka for 5 nights before we'll move to Bilbao: she plans to join serfing courses, but I'm interested in walking. The point for me is Oma valley: caves, animated forest and birdwatching (despite it's not the best season for BW). But I can't find the easy way to get to Oma valley by public transport ( i don't drive and I don't bike). The bus takes too much as it makes a long rout. As I can see, there are several taxi companies in Bermeo, but there are no any tarifs or detailed information. Could you advise me with the shortest way by public transport or how much will take me taxi: f.e. to pick me up at Mundaka (Bermeo) to the entrance of Oma valley, and pick me up from this place back to Mundaka 4-5 hours later (I guess it's enough for walking to animated forest and for visiting caves). The same question about birdwatching. Thank you in advance, Lena.

Itineraries  (6 Answers)

As I posted before, I will go to Bilbao this summer for 5 days.
Could you suggest me itineraries? I hope you will consider that I will be with my 2 boys at the age of 6 (they are twins).

Also, I wonder if it is easy to rent and drive a car in Bilbao Area. Is it easy to park around major attractions?

Beach around Bilbao  (7 Answers)

I have a plan to visit Bilbao this summer. And I will go to the beach with my children. I worried that if I swim with my children and there is no one to watch my belongings, they may be stolen. Would you know the solution to this problem? Is there any safe around the beach?

A difficult pentagon  (3 Answers)

Hello again
I am trying to make a route plan, trying to squeeze in 10 days approx 3 cities that I want to see -Bilbao, San Sebastian and then, though it is France,or for others, Northern Catalunya, Perpignan. The cheapest way to fly for me is to Madrid and take a bus or train to Bilbao -and then leave from Barcelona that is very close to Perpignan. I cant seem to find a reasonable way (except for renting a car, that is out of the question for budget reasons) for the San Sebastian -Perpignan bit. I thought would be easy to get an overnight train and just sleep along but I cant find anything. Any help will be appreciated /thanx

Squeezing In Too Much -- What Should We Give Up?  (7 Answers)

Hi, We're planning an 8 day trip to Basque Country for this July and I think we're squeezing in way too much...but we can't bear the thought of letting go of any one destination. Can anyone let me know what they would pare off if it were them? Or is this realistic?

(Please bear in mind that the pit stop in Barcelona is really just a stopover for the train, not to actually see Barcelona since we'd be arriving late in the day and leaving for Madrid in the AM.)

A thousand thanks...

Day 1: arrive in Madrid
Day 2: fast train to San Sebastian.
Day 3: staying in San Sebastian, make day trip to see the bulls run in Pamplona
Day 4: Leave San Sebastian in AM, rent car and drive to Toulouse
Day 5: stay in Toulouse
Day 6: Drive from Toulouse to Barcelona, stopping midway to see Carcassone. Sleep this night in Barcelona.
Day 7: Leave in AM on fast train from Barcelona to Madrid. Spend day in Madrid
Day 8: Depart Spain

trying to find some infromation...  (3 Answers)

Hello!
My son is traveling in Europe, and he is in Spain right now. He has been to several places in the south and also to Barcelona, and now he is in Madrid.
He wants to continue north, and we heard about Basque Country being very nice.
He is a 22 year old, traveling alone and by train.
Could anyone give us some advice about where he would have a good time? He likes to go where young people are, he loves music and he likes to wander around. He has been staying in youth hostels and wnats to continue doing that.
Any suggestions will be appreciated!!!

Where to stay Bilbao or San Sebastian?  (5 Answers)

I am thinking of traveling to The Basque Country this year with my boyfriend, and I am unsure of where to reside while I'm there, I really like the city life, with plenty of bars and good music scenes, with lovely scenery too, any help would be great in making my decision.

peninsula in basque country.  (10 Answers)

Hi all,

Has anyone got a better memory than me ? A few months back I remember something posted on the Basque country and the answers. One place sounded interesting, so off I went and googled it and had a look at some photos. It was a narrow peninsula onto a small island with ruins of a castle or monastery. There was a stone path leading out there, and I remember the poster saying it was a bit dangerous. For the life of me I cannot remember the name of the place. Does anyone know it or remember the post ?

Thanks in advance.

Hondarribia celebrations first - second week December  (1 Answer)

Does anyone know what is the celebration in Hondarribia during the first and/or second week of December?

Given the haunted post below I had written another hotel but they mentioned they would be open for the festivities the first week, then closed after the festivities.

Are these any particular festivities? I've thought they were holiday related, but was wondering if it's another basque type thing. I've looked at some of the official tourist sites but do not see a post.

Would you stay here - am I overreacting? Hondarribia Parador haunted?  (10 Answers)

When I saw the photos of the Parador at Hondarribia

I made a stop here for the night, as it is on the way and a good stopping point for our trip the first week of December. thought we could also run down to San Sebastian for a while, get back to Hondarribia, rest, and go on

If you click the "play" button on the main photo, or look at the photos you will see the place looks beautiful. Yesterday, however, I clicked on the "More Information" link below the photo, where it says in green "Hondarribia and its parador", and then I had a real "Oh Sh#t" moment. This is what it said:

--- copied
Modernization has respected the numerous memories of a turbulent
and splendid past filled with ghosts and legends. Not in vain has
Hondarribia been known for centuries as the cradle of witches and
akelarres.
Should the visitor desire, in Reception you can find out more about
the numerous passages beneath the castle, which some have entered, never to
be seen again..." "The walls here creak at night." Among those who can bear witness to this fact are the Parador's many famous guests: Sophia Loren, Paco Camino, Natalia Figueroa, Camilo José Cela, and even Pompidou.
--- end of copy

How do you feel about staying here?

ΜADRID TO OVIEDO AND BASQUE COUNTRY  (6 Answers)

hello
i am flying to madrid in june and after a 2-days stay i am planning to go north to visit the basque country. I will have 7 days for the north. Normally it should be enough for the basque country but i'd like to squeeze in Oviedo. i'd like to do santiago de Compostella too, but seems unfeasible. my question is if oviedo is worth sacrificing 2 days, and what the highlihts of the basque country are. And is a daytrip to france recommended? i heard there is a very beautiful place very close to san sebastian.. What about vittoria gasteiz and pamplona?? Is gernica worth visiitng or theres nothing else there than the memories of the war?
thank you

A trip fom Barcelona to San Sebastian  (3 Answers)

I'm planning a trip that will start in Barcelona and end in San Sebastian this May. I've got about 2 weeks. I want this to be a real "food" event. I'd like some suggestions about restaurants, inns and off the beaten path treasures between these two cities. My budget is moderate but not miserly. Any thoughts?
