We will be renting a car in Vienna and spend 4 days day hiking in the Bad Ischl area. Our next destination will be Prague. We have a few questions about how best to proceed...
1) We would prefer driving, but we have heard that the drop off fee to go from Vienna to Prague is very expensive. Are there any car rental companies who don't charge for this?
2) Another alternative would be to drive to last train stop within Austria on the train line to Prague. I was looking at train schedules and I can't see another stop before leaving Austria - am I missing something?
3) Or is just more cost effective and efficient to drive back to Vienna and take the train from there?
gwened is correct, but when renting the car you can try to get one with Czeck licence plates (in that case no drop off charges, but only a small chance) and there is also a bus leaving at 8.20 and 13.40 takiing 4 hours and € 24.
Direct train takes 5 hours and € 47,80, a connection booked early with 2 changes € 24.
one way rentals are also expensive when you leave your car at the border of Austria, so your best option would be : drive the car back to Vienna and take the train from there !
It will be quite fast, BUT of course you will miss a lot of places on your way to Prague, that would be easily doable by car but not so measy by train !
