If you are staying in the general Auckland area, then no, the bus and train transport is OK, also you can catch ferries from downtown to the North Shore and Waiheke Island. Just be aware the buses and trains are not every 5 minutes and do taper off towards the end of the day. However for the CBD, parking can be tight, so walking around is quite good. If flying into the airport, make sure you get a shuttle bus, not taxi as these are very expensive

As said, you will be fine with bus, train and ferry (and foot).

we spent 5 days in Auckland and we traveled by foot, free and paid bus and using the ferry to go to some islands.. within the CBD area there is a free city circuit bus that can bring u to many attractions.. if u fancy going to the suburbs there are many buses that go there to..
