Mardi Himal trek - eastern side  (2 Answers)

Mardi Himal trek - eastern side

I'm planning to do the Mardi Himal trek around late Sept. this year. Rob into-thin-air has posted an excellent guide here on VT covering the main trail on the western side up to Mardi Himal Base Camp West, doable as a teahouse trek all the way:

But if possible I'd also like to get a bit more to the east toward MHBC South, teahouse-style w/o camping. I'd originally thought of going up that way and returning on the western side to finish up at Jhinu Danda hot spring, as Rob did (great memories from the ABC trek!). But now I'm leaning toward starting on the main western trail since it's more gradual -- seems the eastern route is steeper, more appropriate for a quick descent. Also the west is definitely doable teahouse-style, making for a good leisurely start, and it may be possible to get pointers from the staff there, maybe even a local guide. (I'll be going as a FIT if it's still allowed.) So far all the info I've found about the eastern side is for organized camping treks (part is included in the Machapuchare Model Trek).

So if anyone has been on that side recently or can provide links, any general info or specific info about teahouse accommodation would be much appreciated, particularly on these routes:
1) High Camp (West) > MHBC South > Korchon > Khumai Danda > Mirsa/Kharpani
2) High Camp (West) > MHBC South > Korchon > Premo-Shyo > Pilicho > Karuwa

The 2nd route is longer but another viewpoint is marked above Premo-Shyo. For both, only campsites are shown on my map (Nepal Map Publisher 'ABC-Mardi Himal'). ... Maybe possible to carry a bit of food & bivvy one night but I won't be packing a tent.

Finally, is anyone familiar with the little hot spring at Kharpani? (always nice to finish the trek with a soak!) ... the organized-trek notes seem to indicate the area has recovered from the devastating 2012 flood.

P.S. Here's a sketch map that shows the main western & eastern routes (heavy gray lines indicate ridgelines):

Find Best Trekking Agency in Nepal  (10 Answers)

I wanna trek to Annapurna Base Camp and I am wondering about how to find the best trekking agency in Nepal which offers the very best service for the trekkers. I have never been to Nepal and I wanted to be sure that I am done with all the info about the agencies before I land there. Is there any way that I can find and compare trekking agencies so that I can find the best one. That would be very helpful for me.

Annapurna Sanctuary February 2013  (5 Answers)

Hello. I am hoping to do the Annapurna Sanctuary in mid Februay with my wife. We are both about 50, reasonably fit, and set aside 11 days. We plan to hire a porter in Pokhara.

Is this trek acheivable? Any recommendations for quality but affordable accommodation in Pokhara? And a porter outfit to hire from?

Info  (1 Answer)

Greeting folks

I am a newbie to any hiking in the Anna purna region but am not a newbie to hiking or to India. i right now live in the SF bay area. My dream is to do the Annapurna circuit sometime this coming year-2006 (and I have been saving all my vacation time to this end). I don't have any hiking partners so anyone with suggestions where i can get in touch with people with the same goal. I am finding ti hard to figure out some kind of plan here by myself and have ended up spending more time on my computer than off !

Iam open to other possible hikes in the himalaya also, as long as they are not over commercial or over organized.

Pls help

Annapurna circuit in 16 days?  (3 Answers)

Since we dont have 22 days but would like to do most of the Annapurna circuit (Oct/Nov of this year), would it be possible to do the following: Kathmandu - Besisahar by bus (day 1) Besisahar - Ghorepani (15 days) And on day 16, go to Pokara to end the hike, instead of doing the additional 8 day Annapurna sanctuary? Has anyone done this? I need some feedback on this -how is the view of the Annpurna range if one doesnt do the sanctuary part of the hike? Thanks much for any help!!
