Best centrally located hotel?

We would like to be able to walk the city and also be located near mass transit. What hotel do you recommend?

If it has the availability at the right price I'm a big fan of the floating Amstel Botel which is now moored on the other side of the river (regular free ferry from very early until very late) from Centraal Station. Rooms are very spacious by Amsterdam standards and excellent value.

The link at the bottom of my page will give you directions on how to reach it from the railway station,

'Best' is a matter of personal preference and of budget.

I really like the Singel Hotel and have stayed there twice, though you should be aware that rooms can be very small...the three buildings used are very old indeed:

I also, and most recently, stayed at the Hotel Prins Hendrik which I also enjoyed:

Both hotels are ideally placed for both Centraal station, for trams and buses and for exploring the historical centre on foot (which you should most definitely do).

We stayed within 3 minutes walk of Centraal Station, as we use public transport to get around the city and close villages. Also handy for historic towns within 1 hour by train such as Haarlem.

Hotel and transport reviews on my Amsterdam page, Also Haarlam, Volendam etc etc. We took the local bus to the Windmills and Volendam

There's an IBIS hotel build over the first railroad tracks of the Central train station.

That covers your located near mass transit wish.
