Sorry if this has already been discussed but could anyone advise if Amboise would be a good base for 3 ladies who will have to rely on public transport.
We would like to vist a Chateau but mainly interested in walking in the countryside or exploring little villages that are accessible by bus or train or even hiring a bike. We will be coming from Paris by train, from what I have read we will arrive in Tours and then take a bus to Amboise. Thanks
Amboise is on a rail line to/from Tours and also has a couple of bus routes. The train service is fairly reasonable if somewhat irregular. If you already have tickets to Tours or St Pierre des Corps, you can buy tickets for the local train to Amboise on arrival.
(Almost all trains to and from Tours call at St Pierre des Corps, which is the big station outside the city. A frequent service of local trains runs between that station and Tours Centre.)
Be warned that bus services in rural France are very, very, sparse. There are no buses on Sundays or Holidays in this area.
Train times at Amboise can be downloaded and printed from this page

the information is only in French. You can pick up the timetable leaflets locally as well.
You can download the relevant timetables here
the main bus route to/from Tours is this one
I hope that helps and that you enjoy your visit.
Amboise would be a lovely base. There is adequate public transportation if you plan ahead. The nice part is there is quite a bit to do in Amboise itself including the chateau, gardens and Clos Luce and its gardens. There are many lovely restaurants and places to stay. There is a paved walk along the Loire that is beautiful and there are many other walks in the area and along the river. Check at the tourist office for maps and suggestions.
You can easily visit Chateau Chenonceau in the tiny village of Chenonceaux and on to Montrichard. You can train to Villandry and Azay-le-Rideau . . . even Chinon if you want to make a day of it.
I think you might enjoy Amboise enough to be perfectly content right in that particular area. It is just lovely.
