Book in advance for May?

Should we worry about booking in advance if we are planning to stay in a budget place for 1 night in May? Will there be plenty of choices? Do they give big discounts on their normal rates if you book upon arrival (stand by rates)? Do they work on a bartering system there and encourage negotiating lower rates? Is there a good place to go to find cheap accomodation upon arrival by train from Madrid?

Thanks! Happy Travels!

You will not be eligible for any sort of discount if you are only staying for one night. There will probably be the normal low season rates in May, but that's all. Because it's May you don't need to book in advance. Just take the time to look around and you'll find a good price.

Algeciras is a often a transit camp for Moroccans going to and from home. In May it is not busy as factories in Germany and elsewhere are working full tilt and holiday season is quieter. So you won't find a problem. if you arrive late in the evening then maybe some struggle. There are plenty of cheap rooms to be had in and around the port.

I can't see any reason why you would be spending time in Algeciras unless you are coming from/going to Morocco. If that's the case, use Tarifa as your base. Its roughly 20 km from Algeciras, infinitely more pleasant and has a much quicker crossing to/from Tangier (35 minutes approx). You can get to Tarifa by bus, and if you are doing the Tangier crossing, by going with the company FRS they will shuttle you to/from Algeciras for free.

Thanks for all of the feedback!!! I will look into those options ... definitely want to read more info about FRS from Tarifa. We were planning to go Madrid to Casa via Algeciras and Tangier, then come back from Marakesh to Madrid via Tangier and Tarifa. So you think we should go through Tarifa both ways??

My advice would be yes, although Tarifa doesn't have the same facility of onward travel to other destinations. But the FRS free bus to Algeciras makes up for that, and Tarifa is a very pleasant town to spend a night in on the chance that you get in too late to continue onward. I've always stayed at Pension Correo in the center of town, simple and basic but very clean, and room 7 has good views...
