Is Madina a good place to be as a first time visiting Tourist

Hello I am hoping to visit Ghana for the first time actually it will be the first time for me visiting Africa. I am a single parent travelling with my two teenagers and so I will be on a budget but still wish to have a good experience. We will be going over the xmas and new year so I am hoping celebrations for this period will be great too. I have some contacts in Madina and so it looks as if this is where I may be based however some friends who are Ghanian seem not to speak to highly of the area and have mentioned that my kids and I are not very likely to have a good time if we stay there. Apparently it is very far from anywhere central, the beaches, the attractions etc. I will have to take taxi everywhere which will be costly and I am very confused. Please can someone shed some light if you have any familiarity with the area of Madina or just what I can expect on a very first visit to Africia. Ghana. Thank you

From all indications you will not enjoy in Madina with two teenagers.During rush hours you may easily take 1.5 to 2 hours to Labadi BeachIf it is not mandatory for you to stay there and you want Beach and fun, a much better option would be to go and lodge at a priceworthy Hotel or guesthouse like Bora Bora,Ravico or Beachcomber, which is right on the seaside, at the Teshie Nungua Area which is just about 30 minutes drive to Accra Central or at Kokrobite, which is about an hours drive off rush hours.
If you are a prospective Ecotourist with simple needs, the Savannah Inn guesthouse is also another choice with prices in the range of twenty to thirty USD per night for a room foor three.
Thy have a website also.

Labadi pleasure beach is about the only place where you could go for a swim, all other beaches are very polluted and the water full of rubbish.

I stayed in Madina two times in the house of a friend. It's close to Legon University, but far from the city center. Transport can take long. Once I missed an important appointment in town. There was not much to do in Madina itself.

Thank you so very much for your response and the detail given.
I will look to see if I there is something more central for me and the kids and maybe spend a couple nights at my friends place in Medina. I don't have a big budget so travelling back and forth especially if I have to be using taxi's all the time will not be ideal.

Thank you so much for getting back to me.
I will see if there is something affordable nearer town and the attractions.
Don't want to be stuck with two miserably bored teenagers all over the xmas period.!!
