When you get to the station the staff can definitely help you.  We took the ferry to the Statue of LibertyEllis Island and then to the City.  Check to make sure you don't need reservations for the Statue of Liberty.  Due to heighten security issues for the times, you have to book your reservation, similar to Alcatraz.  These things are free to see but they do limit the number visitors at a time, especially during peak times, and also if you want to go to certain levels of the statue.  You can also get direct ferries over to the city that many of the commuters use but the staff can definitely direct you.  Have fun!
