Best way to see the Northern Lights

I'm going to Whitehorse in February for 2 nights to (hopefully) see the Northern Lights. I found a lot of tours offering Northern Lights viewing in cabins etc. but as a solo traveler, I would prefer to just go out there, rent a car, and go northern light hunting in the freezing night on my own away from the city. Is this wise or should I really join a tour to be able to enjoy the lights safely?

Hey Pat,

I wouldn't want to be out in the freezing cold at night trying to find my way in a place I didn't know well, so I would do a tour. Plus there are a lot of them so the prices are relatively competitive. If you do decide to do it on your own,Lead Dog Backpackers Ltd is a good place to stay!
