Where are the world's most amazing buddha statues?

This weekend I was going through some old pictures of a trip I took to Bangkok and thought about how amazing it was to see the enormous reclining buddha at Wat Pho. The scale and the beauty of it is just not to be believed. Easily one of the most amazing things I've ever seen.

Wondering what other buddhas you've seen around the world that just took your breath away?

I think the Bamiyan Buddhas were recently destroyed by the Taliban. The Great Buddha of Leshan near Chengdu is now the world's largest. See my https://travelrat.wordpress.com/2014/12/17/the-great-buddha-of-leshan/

This massive statue of Shakyamuni measures in at a height of 51.5 meters, making it one of the largest statues of Buddha in the world. The statue is made of bronze and is gilded in gold. 125,000 smaller Buddha statues have been placed within the Buddha Dordenma statue, 100,000 8 inch tall and 25,000 12 inch tall statues respectively. Each of these thousands of Buddhas have also been cast in bronze and gilded. The throne that the Buddha Dordenma sits upon is a large meditation hall.

The Buddha Dordenma is located atop a hill in Kuenselphodrang and overlooks the Southern entrance to Thimphu Valley. The statue fulfills an ancient prophecy dating back to the 8th century A.D that was discovered by Terton Pema Lingpa (Religious Treasure Discoverer) and is said to emanate an aura of peace and happiness to the entire world.

The Big Buddha Phuket in the Karon subdistrict of Phuket, Thailand is pretty amazing. It's huge and covered in white marble. It is also at the top of a peak, allowing for 360 degree views of south Phuket.

Sehtatgyi Paya in Pyay came into my mind. It's an enormous Buddha statue sitting among trees, rising above the tree line. Literally.

Buddha statues of Sukothai kingdom, Thailand are the most amazing.

We can see Pra Buddha Chinnarat at Phitsanulok as the most beautiful in the country.

In Bangkok, Phra Satsada and Phra Buddha Sihing at Wat Bowon Niwet, Phra Sri Sakya Muni at Wat Suthat Thepwararam Ratchaworamahawihanwere moved from Sukothai.

Phra Buddha Chinnarat, Phitsanulokprovince.

In the picture below is Phra Achana at Wat Sri ChumSukhothai Historical Park, the UNESCO World Heritage site.

His hands are graceful and light, one of the outstanding artistic characters of Sukothai's buddha statues.

It's not just 1 Buddha statute but thousands in Yangon in particular, at Shwedagon Pagoda.  The entire sight should be viewed at night so as to see the incredible light effects.  It is hard to explain how irreverent it looked to me and how wonderful it is to the local folks.

I think the Buddha in Hong Kong is incredible! I can't remember the island but its well known in the Hong Kong area. Also the buddha at Wat Pho, just like you mentioned is incredible. There is a really nice buddha in Kamakura just outside of Tokyo, and its beautiful in Spring or Autumn as its surrounded by cherry blossoms in spring and amazing maple leaves in Autumn.

Of course there are plenty of impressive Buddha sites all over Asia but two really stand out for me. First is the Tả Cứ site near Phan Thiet, Vietnam where there is a white stone reclining Buddha that is about 150 feet long and was built during the Vietnam War. Very nice. The ride up the mountain was quite nice by cable car!

My personal favorite and surely the winner in the Uniqueness Category is the Ten Thousand Buddhas Monastery in Pai Tau Village in the New Territories of Hong Kong. There are surely more than ten thousand. There is a trail leading up the mountain to the Monastery and it is lined by life sized Buddhas with every variation of human expression depicted on the faces. Some are actually comical and the effect is clearly by design! This place was well worth the effort to find it and the calories burned to reach the top of the mountain.
