What's in your carry on baggage?

What do you take in your carry-on luggage, with you in the plane?

I never check a bag, so everything I bring for the whole trip is in my carry on! Me and the wife have done over a month in Europe and Africa with just our small packs and we aren't stinky hippies lol, the wife's pretty girly.

I bring everything! We travel the world, as a family of four, with carry on only. We use Minaal bags (AWESOME!), eBag packing cubes, and make every item count while still being stylish and appropriate to each culture.

But if you are going to check a bag, at least make sure you have the following in your carryon:

- 1 set of clothes

- pjs

- toiletries

- anything you're bringing that's valuable (ie camera, jewelry, etc)

- speaking of jewelry, even the costume type should go in your carryon, not all people ca tell the difference and may steal it anyway

- your important paperwork (passport, visas, etc) inside your personal item (purse)

- copies of your important paperwork inside your other carryon item

- comfy socks (especially for longhauls)

- a great scarf (use as a blanket, a pillow, a head cover, or just to look better than all the travel schlubs)

- any devices you are bringing, including headphones

- a book, Kindle, magazine, crosswords, whatever

- 2 pens

- pack of Kleenex

- small travel package of baby wipes (a must-have!)

- any medications you take

- a notebook for jotting down all the good ideas that come when you're stuck on a plane

I have similar items already listed. The main point I want to add is I always review what I actually took in my bag when I get back from a trip. If I didn't use it, it doesn't come along next time. I'm always on a quest to have a lighter carry on.

I always travel with:

  • Take all valuables- just in case your bag goes missing
  • A change of underwear and clothes- again in case your bag goes missing
  • A travel toothbrush and toothpaste
  • Small deodorant
  • Wet wipes & tissues
  • Empty your water bottle before you go through customs then refill before you get on the plane
  • Pen & paper
  • Charged up batteries on all multimedia- phone, camera
  • Noise cancelling headphones
  • Layer your clothes- include a spare pair of socks and a scarf to cover up if you get cold
  • Moisturiser and lip conditioner in small container- your skin dries out so much in the air

Sometimes it depends on the trip but we always have:

- Extra socks

- Lip balm

- Lotion

- Hand sanitizer

- Granola bar (or other snack)

- Gum

- Tooth brush

- Pen

... and I also usually always have a pashmina scarf, it's great for makeshift blanket or pillow -- very versatile!

Everything I need. I checked a bag for the first time in a long time yesterday (got some larger-than-3.4 oz bottles for Christmas and wanted to bring them home) and was reminded of why I stopped checking bags in the first place - that additional 15-30 minutes added on to the end of a trip is just painful. Plus, there's always the chance your bag could take longer to arrive or not make it at all, which can be a nightmare if you're traveling through more than one place.

What a fun question! Aside from ID and Credit Cards, I carry hand sanitizer, a book to read, headphones and some facial wipes. I always check in my bags so I don't need to waste time boarding a plane.

It depens on the type of vacation. When I onely travel with a carry-on luggage. I take onely coordinatses to maximise my wardrobe. I try to find clothes that don't rinckle or don't mater if they are. I can go for 2weeks, no problem.

When a beach vacation is planned. I need to bring a small colapsing chair and umbrella. A bigger luggage is then checked-in. Still my carry-on will have a few days changings of clothes, not forgetting the bathing suits, just in case something appends to the checked luggage. I have seen so many travelers with nothing to ware but the close on there back. Not ideal when you come from the cold, jeans and sweathers just won't do...

Extra underwear, socks, shirt, pants, jacket, books (fiction) magazines, reading glasses, solar charger, laptop, hat, water bottle, sketchbook/pen, first aid kit and a toothbrush = a month+ anywhere... unless I'm mountaineering, then I check my gear duffel.

Camera, Kindle, MP3 player, cell phone, ID/money, toothbrush, extra shirt, collapsible water bottle. I stuff this all into an REI Flash 18 pack that can double as a travel pillow (an airline blanket fills it out nicely).

Empty water bottle to fill up after passing through security. 2 Magazines (Afar Magazine is the BEST!),  Kindle, Phone Charger, A pair of Fuzzy Socks, fleece jacket that I can either wear or use as a pillow. Some high protein snacks like jerky or almonds. (cocoa roast!!!), chapstick, jolly ranchers or gum, kindle charger, phone charger, charged Mophie. Never check any important medications. My eyesight is horrible so I also make sure I have a pair of glasses, small bottle of solution and a spare set of contacts. Especially if I have a layover before taking an overnight international flight, a toothbrush and toothpaste are key, as well as a little disposable pack of face wipes. Some people swear by eye masks to keep out the light, but I zonk out without them..especially after taking a few Dramamine or Benadryl.
