Hi Cecile,
I have lived in Wellington for the past 4.5 years! I love it.
Okay, so a weekend in Wellington? Here goes.
For Life, music and workshops... hmmm...

Cuba Street is great for people watching. There's a Night Market (live acts on stage - an open mic type deal) plus food stalls, clothing, music, art etc. It's on a Friday night. (From 5pm until late). It's located at the Left Bank. (Near the  The Bucket Fountain ) Which is also a good place for people watching and seeing buskers perform near by.

Workshops, any in particular? There's foodie ones which have restaurant chef's teaching how to cook in some styles... there's a range of them around the city.
There's cooking schools as well - like the one that's just opened from WELTEC on  Manners Street and the bottom of Cuba Mall.
(Basically the sea end of the city area).

There's  Te Papa Tongarewa - Museum Of New Zealand which is good for history, art, crafts, lessons in culture etc etc. It's big.

There are art galleries along the CBD in various places, some favourites include the ones on  Cuba Street at the top end (away from the sea)...

Mighty Mighty -a bar on  Cuba Street is also great, they have a Night Market set up some weekends.

The  Botanical Gardens are nice, there's flowers on display in the area closest to  Tinakori Road. There's plenty of buses which go past there. Number 3 is frequent in the weekends too and can be caught from most stops in the "Golden Mile" of the CBD.

The Golden Mile is the streets which are  Courtenay PlaceManners Street, and  Willis Street... and also  Lambton Quay at the far end.
(It's the route from the Railway station through the CBD to the end of Courtenay Place).
Plenty of buses along that route all days of the week.
Also plenty of taxis stands along there too.

Courtenay Place is the spot for Night Life as well. From bars, clubs, adult entertainment places to family friendly movie theatres... it has it all!

Don't forget a ride on the  Wellington Cable Car between Kelburn (top of the  Botanical Gardens and  Lambton Quay at the bottom.
Plenty to see on the way. Cheap-ish fares too. You can find more info here: There's also a Museum at the top, which is cool for a history lesson.

There's Farmers Markets at various locations around the city.
A few to note are able to be researched here:
This one here is a particular favourite of mine, although I don't go very often:
The location is the  Frank Kitts Park an underground car-park near Jervois Quay.
--- Little parking nearby, so be prepared to walk there.

Hope that gives you some ideas,

Sweet Mother's Kitchen is a definite place to eat while you are there. I would also head to Mighty Mighty and check out their awesome robot decor and have a tui. Cuba Street is a great place to walk around and people watch. I would also climb (it is easy) to the top of Mount Victoria for the best view of the city.
