We are taking a impromptu road trip and we would like to have interesting stops along the way, we want to stop in some state parks and do some hiking (sadly we are a bit inexperienced) and we want to make sure we don't miss any "must see's." We are looking for anything from landmarks to unique and interesting places. Food suggestions would also be appreciated. Thanks in advance.
Washington, DC (District of Columbia) Nashville (Tennessee) Virginia (VA)
Going through WV, stop in Charleston, tour the stunning Capitol (free), have a craft beer at Capitol Brewing and eat farm-to-table at Bluegrass Kitchen. Go one hour east to Fayetteville (just north of Beckley). Best trail in the nation for hiking, bridge walk on New River Bridge, canopy touring, zip line, world class rafting. Two state parks near by Babcock and Twin Falls. Continue East, stop in Lewisburg and tour the bunker at The Greenbrier Resort. In VA near DC, stop and tour Luray Caverns and Shenandoah National Park along BlueRidge Parkway.
Great Smoky Mountains is a must stop. If you're going this fall, the trees will be awesome.
